Not pregnant just thinking of some possible names for the future. Our baby girl already has a gaelic animal name so I quite fancy if we are blessed with another to carry on the theme!

Cuilean- gaelic for puppy/cub
Pronounced- kwi-lee-an

Why would you do that to a child?

Happymac1 · 16/03/2019 11:57

I am a Gael and I really wouldn't choose that.

Runkle · 16/03/2019 11:58

It sounds like a medical problem Confused

Happymac1 · 16/03/2019 11:58

Also that is not how it is pronounced. It is more like Cooolan 😀

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 16/03/2019 12:00

You want your child, who will become an adult, to be called puppy?!

MissMoodyMoo · 16/03/2019 12:01

Just throwing ideas about! Can scratch that one off the future list 😂

Cuan (can’t remember how to do fada on iPhone) is another, someone in our family is called this and there are a few around. Means little wolf. Coo awn depending on accent

Happymac1 · 16/03/2019 12:03

Intrigued by what your daughter is called

We already have a Fiadh which means deer in gaelic and pronounced Fee-ah. I love the idea of another gaelic animal name! Won't be needing one any time soon tho lol! My little deer is still a baby

I'd more pronounce it quill-inn. I know a little Cuilean and that's how he pronounces it. I think it's a lovely name!

PeachesMao · 16/03/2019 12:15

Love Fíadh too op such a beautiful name

BoomTish · 16/03/2019 12:16

If you like animal names, how about Rónán for a boy? It means little seal.

OP go for it. Are you Irish/Scots? The only problem I can see is learning English if not learning Gaelic - trying to explain the mysteries of Gaelic spelling and pronunciation to fellow pupils, teachers and your own children.

BWatchWatcher · 16/03/2019 16:18

Unless you actually live in a place that speaks Irish/Scots you are dooming your child to a world where no one can pronounce their name.
Please don’t do that.

Quintella · 16/03/2019 16:24

Man alive, Puppy is a bad name to give a kid, no matter what language it's in.

Quintella · 16/03/2019 16:26

And I wish more boys were called Cú Chulainn

I've never met one and I'd do a big inward eye roll if I did meet one. Delusions of grandeur, or wha!

GlitterPixie · 16/03/2019 16:28

I’ve never heard that pronouncistion for Cuilean. It’s like how Americans pronounce Irish names

Quintella · 16/03/2019 16:29

If you like animal names, how about Rónán for a boy? It means little seal

Or the wonderfully named Smugairle Rón, the Irish for jellyfish. Translates as 'seal snot'. Ok, maybe not that one...

GlitterPixie · 16/03/2019 16:32

*pronounciation Blush

beanaseireann · 16/03/2019 16:48

I've heard of Cooleen for a girl
But that seems to be anglicised for Cúilín - which means a little goal. Wtaf

beanaseireann · 16/03/2019 16:49

Cuileann is Irish for holly - as in the sprigs you put up at Christmas.

Wolfiefan · 16/03/2019 16:54

I love Fiadh.
Not helpful I know. Blush
