Future name predictions

Hello,

I’m a bit of a name nerd and have been a stalker on this forum for a while!

Thought I’d make my first thread to discuss what we think will be the future top 20 baby girl names!

My predictions:

  1. Mila will be the new Mia
  2. Iris will be the new Isla
  3. Elsie will be the new Ella
  4. Violet will be the new Lily
  5. Annabelle and Arabella and Isadora will be the new Isabelle/Isabella
  6. Seraphina/Ophelia will rise as an alternative to Sophia.
  7. Molly will replace Millie

Other names that I think will reach top 20
Audrey, Clara, Luna, Nancy, Winter, Harriet, Matilda , Margot, Florence, Beatrice, Flora, Eleanor, Esme, Clementine, India, Willow.

Other names I think will rise:
Cara, Zara (as an alternative to Clara), Henrietta, Tabitha, Ottilie, Martha, Phoebe.

Reading another post Sarah/Sara will rise a little, but not greatly.

The current trend now is “old lady” vintage names replacing the previous trend of princessey flouncy frilly names. Names are getting “stronger” and shorter. I think this trend may last 10-15 years.

I’m interested to hear your predictions?

I don't think Iris is as popular as Ivy, so I think that will be the new Isla.

Tooneyloon · 16/03/2019 07:25

Oh sorry wanted to add that I think Lila(h) will be the new Lily.

Which in turn will make the names Delilah as Lilac increase also!

And O names will be in fashion:

Octavia, Ophelia, Opal, Otillie, Odette.

Olive will rise as an alternative to Olivia.

I hope Flora doesn’t rise that much, I looove it! I think the margarine/gut flora connections might put some people off 🤞🏼Unless of course the Sussexes use it!

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 07:33

All girls will be called Amelie/Amelia/Emilia/Emmeline/Esme.
If you don't like them there's always Margot!

Tooneyloon · 16/03/2019 07:37

bluemerchent haha, I think people are slowly getting over that trend...

But Mila might be a strong contender for these Amelia names...

Those just seem small vaiants on the current trends

(and I disagree about Iris, because for everyone who thinks 'flower' there's someone else who thinks 'eyeballs')

I think the trend will be (as it often is) towards names which seem 'right' but aren't quite as familiar to those aged around 30 - so it's the next generation of grannies and their names:

Amanda, Pamela, Samantha, Deborah, Jennifer, Louise, Victoria, Joanie

and Elizabeth - affection for HMQ driving this one, perhaps with Gloria sneaking in a bit too

And of course it's rally hard to imagine a different name at the top of the most-used charts than Olivia (how many years is it now? Really quite surprised at its durability)

DitzyPrints · 16/03/2019 07:42

Arabella is an interesting one dd is 6 and when I was expecting her I really liked that name but people thought it was ott but ds 3 knows two Arabellas.

Tooneyloon · 16/03/2019 07:43

Oh yes! Didn’t think about the Queen and her inevitable passing in the future (sorry to sound so morbid!).

I agree names like Elizabeth, Victoria, Gloria etc will definitely rise in her honour! (The name Honor may also rise!)

Most of the names you mention are already on the rise OP so your predictions are fairly uncontroversial

I agree that vintage names will continue to be popular, the ones I expect to become popular next include:

Daphne
Rita
Rhona/Rhondda
Mavis
Beryl
Gina
Vera

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 08:07

I can't think of Gloria without a song popping into my head.
I think 1960s names will be back as people name babies after grandparents.

ParadiseLaundry · 16/03/2019 08:26

I've thought Myrtle was due a comeback for a while. I can imagine it being embraced by hipsters.

Agree with Vera coming back too. As the Duckworth and Lynn connotations die off, it's actually a very pretty name.

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 08:48

Wasn't Vera the protagonist in a controversial book/film ?

Sophronia · 16/03/2019 09:40

It does make me laugh when people respond to threads about top 100 names saying "trendy/of the moment/will date" because if you look back through history to 1890s/1900s, you can for the most part age a person by their name.
And its all relative. I named my son a name that is currently top 10. I didn't know that when I named him, I picked the name because I loved it. People on here make out there will be multiples in their class/year. My son has attended baby groups, nursery, preschool and swimming class and we've only ever met one other.

PsychoCrayon · 16/03/2019 09:56

How far into the future are you looking?

My daughter is an Amelia, born in 1999, I’ve just had a look and it was #37 the year she was born. Lily, Isabelle, Mia and Olivia were all in the 40s/50s. So I’d say the names halfway down the list will rise to the top if you go forwards just 20 years.

n0ne · 16/03/2019 10:47

Interesting to see both my DCs' (6 and 1.5) names mentioned. Certainly DC1's name was heavily scoffed at 6 years ago (don't care, loved it then and now) but I hope it doesn't get too popular.

pineapplebryanbrown · 16/03/2019 12:12

I think we are seeing the end of flower and frilly names. And hopefully the E name variants.

I think we're about to go plain:

Jane
Mary
Susan
Catherine
Caroline
Claire
Sarah

pineapplebryanbrown · 16/03/2019 12:18

Names i would love to see rise

Maxine
Stephanie
Louise
