If it were not for the books

what would you think of the name Adrian? I am not from the UK, but still read a fair bit of Sue Townsend. We live overseas and most people would not make the association.

I don’t hate it but it’s a definite “dad name”, or granddad now probably! Prefer Julian.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 14/03/2019 16:05

I just cannot disassociate it from Mr Mole, the not very clever intellectual. I can imagine that overseas it's probably quite a cool name.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/03/2019 16:12

The youngest Adrian I know is a year younger than I am, so late 30's.

Nothing wrong with the name at all. Just very unfashionable at the minute in the UK

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/03/2019 16:12

Cant imagine a baby Adrian, i guess could be an Addy

BlueMerchant · 14/03/2019 16:14

I don't like it at all- books or no books.

PCohle · 14/03/2019 16:16

It doesn't make me think of the books at all, but I agree it strikes me as quite a middle aged name.

Aidan seems like a younger name.

Shadow1234 · 14/03/2019 18:43

Not my cup of tea

GraceMarks · 14/03/2019 19:26

Mole. Also very easy to mistype as Adrain.

ApplestheHare · 14/03/2019 19:31

When I saw Adrian in your post I thought of the books but actually I know a cool, successful, mid-30s Adrian in real life and have never once thought of the Mole while spending time with him. It's never come up. There's always something you can associate with any name so I'd say go for it if you like it.

Mendingfences · 14/03/2019 19:33

Its a reasonably popular name where i am (Not uk). Pronounced add Rian rather than aid Rian.

Whoops75 · 14/03/2019 19:37

Know one aged 10 its a nice change from the million jacks and james’

Aidan is nicer imo

foxtiger · 14/03/2019 20:20

Although I was just the right age for the first couple of Adrian Mole books, they're not my first association with that name. It suggests to me a slim, gentlemanly, polite and possibly slightly posh middle-aged man.

Tillygetsit · 15/03/2019 00:32

My first crush was on a boy called Adrian. God he was gorgeous!

MercyBodle · 15/03/2019 02:07

The books are well known outside the UK. A dated and unappealing name to me.

Sessy19 · 15/03/2019 06:57

Written, it looks like a reasonably good name. But saying it.... I don’t know! It’s just such a strange sound, but my issue with it is unexplainable perhaps.

I knew an Adrian with profound learning difficulties who was very aggressive and unfortunately a bit disinhibited. I think that’s probably tainted the name somewhat as well b

aliceandkids77 · 15/03/2019 10:37

don't care for it personally but if you love it the book association should not matter. x

EstrellaDamn · 15/03/2019 10:39

I don't think Adrian Mole at all.

I think AA Gill.

I quite like it but I think most people would raise their eyebrows a little.

RayaJambalaya · 15/03/2019 12:07

Don't know what books you're on about. Don't love the name but it's fine, don't see an issue and wouldn't bat an eyelid if I met an Adrian of any age.

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 14:37

My first thought is Adrian Lux, the DJ. I think the association with Adrian Mole is getting old and wouldn’t let that put you off.

emilybrontescorsett · 16/03/2019 15:02

I don't like it.

whitehalleve · 16/03/2019 15:14

The only Adrians I know are A holes. For that reason I can't stand the name.

emwithme · 16/03/2019 15:33

I dated an Adrian once. He made the plastic wrap that goes round (eg) CD cases and fag packets.

It's been 20 years and still when I can't open that kind of packaging I swear at him.
