What do you think of the name Leonie?

I love this very old French name. It’s not very popular in the UK so ticks that box for me, but also doesn’t sound too “out there”. What do you think? Also, nickname suggestions would be great.

The two I have known didn't abbreviate it. One had a nickname but it was nothing to do with Leonie ...

I like it.

VelvetPineapple · 14/03/2019 13:49

I find it chavvy but that has a lot to do with people I’ve known who are named that.

IHeartKingThistle · 14/03/2019 13:50

I absolutely love it. I don't think it's at all 'chavvy'.

Chewbecca · 14/03/2019 13:50

I knew a Leonie once who was an interesting, chatty, dynamic woman so it has good associations for me.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 14/03/2019 13:51

I'm not particularly keen but I don't hate it either

I wouldn't have realised it was French and to me is has the same vibe as Leeanne which I wouldn't class as exotic or sophisticated

Having said the above, if you love it then use it as whatever name you choose you won't please everyone and my opinion really shouldn't matter to you!

MerryMarigold · 14/03/2019 13:52

I love it. Only ever known one, firmly lower middle class!

Peachbubble · 14/03/2019 13:56

Always liked it. Don't think it's chavvy at all.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/03/2019 13:56

I like it.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2019 13:56

I really love it.

keepingbees · 14/03/2019 14:01

I went to school with one. Nice name but she was always having to correct how people pronounced it.
She pronounced it Lee-on-ee and most people seemed to think it was pronounced Lee-own-ee

aliceandkids77 · 14/03/2019 14:04

V cute imo! Nn Leo is adorable too x

CanIKondo · 14/03/2019 14:06

Makes me think of These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer - good connotations

rosydreams · 14/03/2019 14:13

i think its nice

shhsecret · 14/03/2019 14:16

If you like it, go for it.
I went to school with a Leona and you could always use Leonie as a nickname?

AHintOfStyle · 14/03/2019 14:16

I really like it. When I was younger I wanted to be called that!

Narya · 14/03/2019 14:20

It's ok but I've heard more than one pronunciation which puts me off it a bit as I don't like the idea of having to correct people. I've met both a Lee-OH-nie and a LAY-oh-nie.

Rhynswynd · 14/03/2019 14:23

It's a middle aged bogan name here in Aus

AnnaSparks · 14/03/2019 14:24

I like both pronounciations - I think Lay-oh-nee is more like the French way, and in the UK we tend to say Lee-oh-nee. Not actually sure which I like best!

Too cute for me, I picture a fluffy puppy when I read it.

BreconBeBuggered · 14/03/2019 14:27

I like it. I've never met a Leonie, so it doesn't have any connotations or class indicators at all for me.

AnnaSparks · 14/03/2019 14:28

@Rhynswynd oh no! A chav/bogan name is the last thing I want Confused

Absolutely gorgeous!

Susannach · 14/03/2019 14:54

Lovely

chickenalapesh · 14/03/2019 14:56

Hmmm, no offence but I find it quite chavvy.

Persimmonn · 14/03/2019 15:00

It is pretty chavvy. I knew a Leona in school and she was a caaahh.
