Hi! Looking for some help, my husband and I love love LOVE the sound of the name Eilidh, I am part Scottish, however we live in England. It is pronounced ay-lee, I guess Hayley without the H. The spelling I can see being a issue here though. We like the look of both Aylie and Ailey, but want to know which is best? Do you prefer Ailey or Aylie? Thank you :)

I wouldn’t do it - it turns an otherwise lovely name into something that looks made up/yoonique. There are lots of English girls named Eilidh, people would quickly learn how to spell it!

HundredYearOldMan · 14/03/2019 07:38

Ailie

PiggyPlumPie · 14/03/2019 07:39

DDs friend is Ailie. We are in NE Scotland!

Sirzy · 14/03/2019 07:39

To me this falls into one of those names that you don’t touch. It is beautiful as it is.

calpop · 14/03/2019 07:40

I think Ailie id a common accepted spelling though isnt it? I know one who is 40, child of 2 scottish parents.

dementedpixie · 14/03/2019 07:40

I agree it would be Aillie

dementedpixie · 14/03/2019 07:41

I would have Aillie with the double 'll'

BluebellsareBlue · 14/03/2019 07:43

@Sirzy I totally agree. It's such a beautiful name you shouldn't change the spelling at all. I'm east Scotland and have a few friends with this name (written Eilidh), and it is beautiful

soundsystem · 14/03/2019 07:44

I know an Eilidh in England, and usually you only have to tell people once that it's not "Eyelid".

I would spell it as is...

Elllicam · 14/03/2019 07:45

I like Ailie.

3out · 14/03/2019 07:46

Stick with Eilidh. It looks far prettier than the other versions (which just look like Aileen, which isn’t nearly as nice a name imo). Lots of names are spelled incorrectly due to all the variants on a common name (like Alistair, or Kathryn for example). Sure, some people might think she’s called eyelid but anyone with any common sense will think ‘ok, I know this name looks like eyelid to me, but that can’t possibly be their name’

LMR93 · 14/03/2019 07:50

Wow, fast feedback! :O
Thank you all so much, I think you all may have a fair point about people soon learning how to spell the name, my cousin is called Siobhan, she has had the odd sy-oh-ban pronouciation and she has had it spelt a bunch of ways, most common is Shivon, but once they are told people usually get it right :) I do really like Ailey but I also find Eilidh timeless! If it helps at all her middle name will possibly be Bridget, so on paper it would look like:

Eilidh Bridget last name
Ailey Bridget last name
Aylie Bridget *last name
Ailie Bridget last name

Bridget is just a name we like but aren't brave enough to use as a first name, it has no special meaning so if you have any better middle name ideas, feel free to throw them our way :) Thank you!

Eilidh Bridget is by far the best.
Other spellings make it look made-up and 'cheap'. Bridget is lovely.

3out · 14/03/2019 07:59

I may have a weirdly too strong opinion on this, but the ‘A’ spelling is hurting my eyes and head, it’s like nails on a blackboard for me!

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 14/03/2019 08:04

Please do the original spelling. The others scream "my parents wanted a name but didn't know how to spell it".

MrsR1993 · 14/03/2019 08:23

Honestly, thank you all for the help!
As I am part Scottish, I find the Eilidh spelling the most 'normal' but it was my husband mainly who was stressing over the spelling, so it is good I can now show him the traditional spelling will be okay here :) Also, sorry for being a pain in the backside, but could I also ask another question, what middle name would you put with Eilidh? As I've said above we do also like the name Bridget but don't think we are brave enough to use it as a first name😂 So my question is does Eilidh Bridget flow nicely, or it be better to use Eilidh now with another middle name and save Bridget for if we have a second girl in the future? Actually I think Eilidh and Bridget sounds really nice for sisters Grin. Oh if it helps with middle name ideas, her last name will begin with R so it'll be Eilidh R❤

widgetbeana · 14/03/2019 08:27

I like Eilidh Rose. But it might be too many Rs if the surname is an r too.

I think it needs to be a name that doesn't start with a vowel and doesn't end with an 'e' sound. Which is why Bridget works! I am struggling with an others, but I am a bit sleep deprived!

BeGoodTanya · 14/03/2019 08:31

Another saying stick with the real spelling. I’m Irish living in England and hate the anglicised Neeves and Chevonnes. I have an Irish name and surname, and DS has an unusual Irish first name and two Irish surnames, and people manage.

3out · 14/03/2019 08:33

Eilidh and Bridget would be lovely sisters’ names. I wouldn’t overly stress about a middle name because it will be used so infrequently. Just try to avoid names which might spell out others when initialled (Felicity Ursula Caroline Kirkness for example, won’t look good on your child’s painting at primary school. Or was it just our Primary that asked you to initial everything?)

xyzandabc · 14/03/2019 08:36

I have an Eilidh in England. Have to say, we're 13 years in to it and people don't learn to spell it! Teachers are fine, siblings are fine, Scottish grandparents are fine, best friend is fine but beyond that it's a bit of a lottery (even English grandparents don't get it right every time).

We all like it though and wouldn't change it. I also have a name that can be spelt different ways so it really doesn't bother us or her. Spelling it with an A looks a bit like you wanted Hayley but are trying to be different.

Also chances are there won't be another one in the school so if you say Eilidh, everyone knows who you're referring to.

PhilipJennings · 14/03/2019 08:40

I knew someone named Ailidh when I was little, if that spelling doesn't offend you too much!

I like Brigid but I think with Eilidh a single syllable might work well. Would you consider Bríd or Briege? Keeping the Scots/Gaelic aspect of the name?

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/03/2019 08:41

I love the original spelling with Bridget. I would have to learn the spelling but I know how to pronounce it (there's an athlete with this name).

HotpotLawyer · 14/03/2019 08:45

I am English and have no difficulty with Scottish names after I have been told once,

The trad spelling is by far the best.

Plenty of people manage the names of malt whiskies, do they not?

YogaPants · 14/03/2019 08:45

Eilidh Bridget.

Very nice.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/03/2019 08:49

OP, have you had a name change fail?
