Eliza? Juno?

Just found out we are expecting baby number two, and although it's early days I can't help getting excited about names.

I have a boy's name, but I love girls names and so it's much more difficult for me to choose!

I love vintage sounding names, and also (I despise this word but can't think of another way to describe it) names which are "spunky" (shudder).

Always loved Eliza but is it a bit common now?

I think Juno is beautiful too.

Genevieve is on my list but is it too frilly?

Beatrix is cool - isn't it?

Love Scarlett but again, too common?

Katherine (Kitty) - love the nickname but a bit bored by the first name

Flora - we live abroad so the spread thing isn't an issue

Any thought on these, or similar suggestions?

Will be a sibling for Reuben.

Many thanks!

Beatrix is very cool, but I may be biased because I have one.

Eliza, Genevieve and Catherine ( I prefer the C spelling) were all on my list this time round but DH vetoed.

Flora I find a bit meh, and I'm really not keen on Juno.

Others on my list were Juliet and Eloise.

I’m not a fan of juno, I don’t like how it ends in “o” it makes it seem masculine.

My favourite is Catherine (spelt like this). You can’t beat it. Timeless, classic and cute nicknames like kitty/Katie etc.

The rest on your list are nice too, with Eliza being above flora/ Beatrix

burritofan · 13/03/2019 07:41

Juno is a wonderful name, my favourite from your list. Beatrix, Kitty, Genevieve and Flora all lovely too. Only one I'm not keen on is Scarlett.

Re. Kitty, no reason you have to call her Katherine, you can put Kitty on the birth certificate.

Susannach · 13/03/2019 07:58

Love Beatrix and Eliza! Both go really well with Reuben too.

Icantthinkofanameohno · 13/03/2019 08:06

Thanks for the opinions! I was thinking Eliza, Katherine, Beatrix and Flora would have the middle name June (obvs couldn't use this with Genevieve or Juno!). Does this sound okay? The name is sentimental to us.

Based purely on sound of the name I do like Eliza the best, but I'm worried there are so many around now - or am I wrong about this? Do you know of many?

Can anyone think of any names which are a similar style which I could consider? I feel like I'm not 100% in love with these yet x

For the popularity of any name - not just Eliza - in England and Wales look at this website names.darkgreener.com/
It's accurate and based on official government statistics.
Eliza ranked 41 in 2017 (the last year for which govt figures are available). It's been growing in popularity quite steadily over the last 10 years. But still far from top ten.

LaMarschallin · 13/03/2019 09:10

My only proviso about Juno would be the fact that I have a friend with this name and she's sick and tired of the following exchange:
"What's your name?"
"Juno"
"No, I don't - that's why I'm asking! Hahahahahaha!"

chiarazuri · 13/03/2019 09:16

Eliza is beautiful! Juno sounds slightly masculine to me!

aliceandkids77 · 13/03/2019 10:03

I adore your name list! I actually like all of the names on your list and all them except Juno and Flora where on our lists for our girls!
Can I suggest Iris? I think it's such a beautiful and unique name and looking at your list I think you could like it x

Icantthinkofanameohno · 13/03/2019 11:05

Haha, I love that about Juno! I'd never thought of it sounding like 'D'you know' before! That's something to consider anyway Grin

Iris is beautiful! The only issue with the name is that it's the name of a relative who died aged just 5 (a grandmother's sister, so nobody I knew - do you think this makes it unusable, or would it be nice? My grandmother has passed away too, now, so wouldn't affect her either way). Would a connection like this put you off using a name?

Beatrix not my favourite but works well with Rueben I think..
Like Katharine

Also Eliza - but why not Elizabeth - then you could have Eliza or Betty and It seems to go better with Reuben - both more formal names in my head .....

Adelaide?

UnicornsAndGlitterxx · 13/03/2019 11:18

@Icantthinkofanameohno I always liked the name dolcy- mae I haven't heard any baby be called that (dolsi May pronounced) renee ? I've only saw these on a show once and they've always stuck x

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/03/2019 11:22

I don't like Juno at all. It's one of those names that was popular for a short while and dated really quickly, IMO. Plus I just don't like the sound of it.
I love Eliza. I've never met one, nor have I heard of any while out and about.
Beatrice is nice.
Kathleen is okay, but I don't like Kitty.
Dont like any of your other names.
Also I wouldn't say Reuben was vintage, so I don't think any of the names you're looking for will with Reuben. Not that its a huge problem.
Some suggestions.
Iris.Vivienne. Mabel. Sarah. Lottie
Maude. Penelope. Martha. Rosa

Icantthinkofanameohno · 13/03/2019 11:52

Oh that's interesting to hear as I'd always assumed Juno was quite a timeless name -I always thought that Roman and Greek goddess names didn't really age too badly - but there was a film with the name Juno some times in the 00s and maybe that caused a spike in popularity. I didn't know it had ever been popular, to be honest. I've never heard of any, but I did move abroad several years ago so it's quite possible I just missed it!

Reuben was apparently a popular name in Victorian times and I've always had a soft spot for Victorian novels. I seem to like the names of the scullery maid in basically ever Victorian novel I've ever read Grin Love the suggestions Martha, Mabel, Iris and Lottie as they fit that category nicely!

I've never heard the name Dolci before - it sounds quite sweet, although I think the 'see' sound at the end would clash with our surname (which starts with a similar sound)

As for Elizabeth - weirdly, I love pretty much all the nicknames for Elizabeth (except Liz) but for some reason the name Elizabeth just doesn't really sound right to me. It's a shame as the nickname potential is amazing!

UnicornsAndGlitterxx · 13/03/2019 12:11

@Icantthinkofanameohno Rhia? Nickname riri 😂 sounds a bit like celebrity Rihanna's nick name tho x still nice x

PanannyPanoo · 13/03/2019 12:22

I love Eliza, it was on our list .
Dulcie is the more traditional spelling,
Clara could be another option.
Or Elspeth - get all the Elizabeth nicknames without Liz!

Susannach · 13/03/2019 14:38

I don’t know any Elizas but I know two Junos!

What about Saskia, Jemima, Cleo, Greta, Xanthe...?

Icklepup · 13/03/2019 15:18

Eliza June sounds great

Bellaposey · 13/03/2019 18:40

I love your list! Not keen on Juno or Guineviere though sorry - prefer Juliet to Juno.

Eliza June is beautiful.
