I was surprised and disappointed that Simon Cowell's son was named Eric. Didn't like it at all. But since then it's grown on me more and more! I would never use it myself but I really rather like it now. Which surprises me!

Love it. Dd was going to be Eric 22 years ago.

I know two little Erics under 3, so I think it must be increasing in popularity, at least in my area

MotherOfDragonite · 10/03/2019 16:10

I think it's gorgeous -- a strong mid-century name that's coming round again for new popularity, but isn't yet too "cool" so I'd imagine there wouldn't be three little Erics in the same reception class.

When I think of the name Eric I think of a young man with broad shoulders and an interest in architecture. Maybe he likes to build furniture in his spare time, and looks great in Shetland knitwear :-)

Love it

Thanks all! Quite mixed responses. My association was the little mermaid too but only one person said that! It's also a family name for me and I recently met a baby Eric which made me think it is usable nowadays. I am not entirely sure if we will use it, but it will stay on the short list!

Eric makes me think of Eric Carle and the Very Hungry Caterpillar, which makes me happy as it was DS1's favourite book as a toddler. Smile. I also like Erik but would expect a little Erik to be Scandinavian, or at least to have connections to Scandinavia.

RayaJambalaya · 10/03/2019 21:16

I did also think of Eric from the little mermaid first of all. Was gonna mention it but saw someone else had already.

I love it. It’s ds2’s middle name he’s 8 and thinks it’s a fab name he loves it as much as his first name.

Littlereen · 10/03/2019 22:30

Sorry but I can’t shake the fact it’s a slang name for an erection 🙈

Jsmith99 · 10/03/2019 22:31

I know a lovely, handsome Rottweiler called Eric. He’s a cool dude, and it’s a great name.

Sophronia · 10/03/2019 22:36

I like it

MrsEricBana · 10/03/2019 22:39

Someone call?

Jessbow · 11/03/2019 07:42

Elderly uncle, difficult name for small child to get tongue round.

Eric morphed in Err-wig and Err-wig into earwig...………

Fond memories, Uncle Earwig x

DontCallMeCharlotte · 11/03/2019 22:31

Agree re not being "Grandpa Chic" but then I loathe pretty much all the OAP names.

And yet spelt Erik it looks fine. Go figure...

(and many British people are descended from Vikings so it's perfectly valid to use it Wink)

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/03/2019 22:35

Cantona. I love the name

RomanyQueen1 · 11/03/2019 22:40

I have an 88 year old uncle Eric.
It was quite popular in the 30's and 40's.

RomanyQueen1 · 11/03/2019 22:44

or there's this one, a happy chap Grin

Nevergotobedfangry · 12/03/2019 16:00

My late step grandads name, but there from day 1 unlike biological maternal grandad if I have a girl she will be erica!

KingMash · 12/03/2019 20:44

For some reason when I was at primary school, people used to lick their finger and say 'eric' when someone farted Confused

Put me off the name for life

Jag1777 · 13/03/2019 01:26

Love Eric! It’s my husbands name so I’m biased. Eric is adorable for a baby now because there’s not very many of them!

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 13/03/2019 07:04

I like it. It is due a come back.
