Thoughts on Tamsin?

MimiSunshine · 10/03/2019 08:41

We can’t find a single girls name we both like.
I’ve considerd Tamsin before and starting to consider it again but don’t come across it much so was wondering what others thought of it?

Classic
Dated?
A bit ‘posh’ in a good or a bad way?
Common

Etc etc

Our DD is P ene lope so want a name that has a similar feel to that which to me is
Classic
Feminine but not too girly
Known but not overly common
Don’t mind the ‘its a bit posh’ comments we got in the early days

Thanks all. I totally get the slightly mixed feelings around it.

I’m not sure I love it but do like it a lot and DP doesn’t seem sold on it but I think that’s partly because I love Juliette and he is very keen on Isabelle (with Isabella close behind and a recent suggestion of Clarabella 🤨).

Neither of either of us want to use the others preference so I’m letting Juliette go 😔 and trying to find a name that ticks the boxes for both of us.
Which I think means going for something a bit frillier than I would truly choose as the middle name is something I’ve chosen and means a lot to me and DP is sort of just going along with.

I still get Tazmin a ,it even with the z spelling. Not the end of the world though.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 10/03/2019 17:40

Clarabella has to be the frilliest name in frill town.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2019 17:42

I love Annabel but also like Tamsin

Two n though in Annabel

MimiSunshine · 10/03/2019 18:13

@FiddleFadeDingDong tell me about it 😱 I thought it was a joke and he doesn’t think it’s that much different to An(n)abel 😳

I like Tamsin, but I do prefer the longer original form of Thomasina - but that does have a bit of a different feel. It is both frillier and also more formal.

ShadyLady53 · 10/03/2019 18:58

I teach a Tamsin who is always getting called Jasmine! I actually prefer the name Jasmine to Tamsin but the latter is still a good name. For some reason I see it as a bit hippyish and 70s but in a world of Ava’s and Darcies it’s a welcome change.

PhoenixBuchanan · 10/03/2019 19:05

Wonderful name, was on my list for DD2 and would likely be my pick if I ever had a DD3!

Happyandglorious · 10/03/2019 19:49

I think it's great. Goes well with Penelope.
I also like Anabelle but prefer Tamsin.
Congrats and good luck

SemperIdem · 10/03/2019 22:48

I like it. I’ve only ever met one and she’s never been called Tammy.

BoudicasBoudoir · 11/03/2019 17:00

I love Tamsin. She’s my sister.
N.B. We are both Cornish and extremely posh. Grin

foxtiger · 14/03/2019 21:46

I like Tamsin a lot in itself, and I also like the fact that it's never been popular enough to be strongly associated with a certain age group. I wouldn't say it was particularly posh, though it's probably more middle-class than working-class, if that even matters. It feels like a name for a creative independent thinker to me.

People have mentioned confusion with "Tasmin" - has anyone ever actually been called that, apart from that one singer? I've certainly never met or heard of another one.

Beamur · 14/03/2019 21:49

I like it a lot.
Clarabella is a bit ridiculous. (Apols to any reading this).

MerryMarigold · 14/03/2019 21:52

Dd was going to be Tamsin my whole pregnancy but I suddenly went off it at the end. Felt it was too Jilly Cooper for me in the end. Also liked Meredith, Claudia and Kirsten/ Kristin. Personalty disjunction Annabel a lot.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2019 21:52

I really like it. i only know one, she is an adult. It does work well with Penelope, which I also love.

MerryMarigold · 14/03/2019 21:52

Personally I dislike Annabel, should say.

MerryMarigold · 14/03/2019 21:55

Is Melissa semi frilly enough?

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 14/03/2019 22:14

I like Tamsin. I only know one and she’s mostly called Tam.

I read a book when I was 10/12 ish in which the heroine was called Tamsin and I loved it then! (I think it might have been a Penelope Lively - Tudor fiction and it was fab!)

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 14/03/2019 22:18

(Just coming back to correct myself that the author was Rosemary Sutcliff and the book was called The Armourer’s House... crucial to your thread!)

GlitterPixie · 14/03/2019 22:47

I know a horrible Tamsin and it’s put me off the name but if it wasn’t for that I’d quite like it

MercyBodle · 15/03/2019 11:46

I love Tamsin, one of my favourite names. And it's great next to sister Penelope. Annabel is nice enough but Tamsin is much more interesting. I like both spellings Tamsin, Tamzin.

Firewall · 15/03/2019 11:57

Juliette is so beautiful. Love that name.
Juliette Isabelle would work!

Antonin · 15/03/2019 15:06

Lucette
Bella
Aphra
Venetia
Pamela
Rosetta (very popular in the earlly 19th Century)

MimiSunshine · 15/03/2019 15:07

Thanks all. We’re no closer to deciding on a girls name.

I’ve let Juliette go, DP just isn’t keen but I still think it’s the best option abd he’s just a weirdo with bad taste 😄😉

I agree though that Tamsin is more interesting than Annabel

I went to school with a Tamzyn who was a knob so I’m biased against it 😬
