Thoughts on the name Aura?

OP posts:

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/03/2019 08:59

No. It brings to mind migraines and Rita. It looks pretty in writing but doesn't sound nice at all. Very ugly in fact.

EssentialHummus · 09/03/2019 09:02

Maybe Aurora? I agree with a PP.

maamalady · 09/03/2019 09:03

It will get misheard as Laura every time.

BarkandCheese · 09/03/2019 09:05

It’s the name given to the sensation many suffers get right before migraines and epileptic fits, not a pleasant association for a child’s name.

Jamhandprints · 09/03/2019 09:08

This name is common in South America but it's actually pronounced "Ow-ra" I quite like it pronounced like that but not "Or-ra" because that's a migraine symptom.

3out · 09/03/2019 09:09

Negative connotations for me, sorry.

MollyHuaCha · 09/03/2019 09:09

Not keen

Bloomini · 09/03/2019 09:10

A lifetime of misspelled and mispronunciations await the poor child...

dalmatianmad · 09/03/2019 09:12

Awful sorry

NannyR · 09/03/2019 09:15

Aurora is a very pretty name with a similar sound. Laura is lovely too and not that common these days.

BlueMerchant · 09/03/2019 09:17

Am surprised at myself but I actually like it. Looks and sounds pretty.

nocluenoidea · 09/03/2019 09:37

Hadn't heard of the migraine thing, and Aurora sounds like it has one syllable too many!
Aura isn't too different to Orla? Laura sounds too 80s :(

OP posts:
ElizabethMainwaring · 09/03/2019 09:40

Orla is much nicer. I work with one, and everyone I hear or see the name I think how lovely it is. Classic and unusual at the same time.

Whisky2014 · 09/03/2019 09:40

Don't like aura. What about Lara?

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/03/2019 09:40

Every time rather.

Chwaraeteg · 09/03/2019 09:48

If I met someone called aura I would roll my eyes and think the parents were a bit woo. Probably into reiki / homeopathy / amber teething shit etc. Maybe anti vaxxers. I live in Bristol though so I've become pretty adept at filtering out these types.

RayaJambalaya · 09/03/2019 09:54

My friends little newborn is called Aura. She is far from the judgemental description mentioned above. I think it's beautiful OP. I'd keep off this thread now and just call your baby whatever you want. My daughters name. Didn't her the best reaction on here. However we used it anyway and it gets compliments daily!!

Melonwater · 09/03/2019 10:12

I like it.

How about Audra?

JenSFP · 09/03/2019 10:14

Pretty in writing; not so great when said out loud I’m afraid

Saffrona · 09/03/2019 13:33

I prefer aurora, I think this is a beautiful name with a gorgeous meaning and sleeping beauty connotations.

SemperIdem · 09/03/2019 13:36

I met a toddler Aura recently. I’d never heard it before.

Not sure about it as a stand-alone name but it could be a nickname for Aurelia (rather than Ray which is an awful shortening for such a pretty name).

Arpafeelie · 09/03/2019 14:34

No. It's the name of a migraine symptom. So many other names to choose which have no negative connotations.

Gobletoffire · 09/03/2019 15:22

Looks pretty in writing but just reminds me of sicky migraines :(

TatianaLarina · 09/03/2019 16:21

I’d assume hippy parents. But wouldn’t be as narrowly provincial and judgemental as Chwara, who sounds like the kind of person I would ‘filter out.’

Aurora, Aurelia, Aurelie, Audrey, Aubrey, Oriane, Ornella.

HaventGotAllDay · 09/03/2019 17:07

I'd assume hippy parents who wanted to be creative and unique. (And I'm a migraine sufferer).
It just sounds like a random word someone has decided would be OK as a name.
Aurora would saddle you with a lifetime of pronunciation corrections and queries. English way or Italian?
