Interested to know people’s opinions on this name for a boy....maybe it’s my hormones, but I woke up a week ago and it’s all I can think of!! 😂

My son is called Rudy! I absolutely love it. Also call him Rudes for short. It's becoming quite popular I think, as I've heard a few around recently.

Mintypea5 · 08/03/2019 19:43

My cousins husband is called Rudy. He’s Cuban. I think it’s avreally nice name

123Flopsy · 08/03/2019 20:15

Rudes Shock

missbrightside09 · 08/03/2019 21:06

Sorry I feel like I need to comment again because the number of negative comments on here is just ridiculous. We have never had any negative comments, in fact most ppl say what a lovely and cool name it is. Our Rudi is named after the character in the book thief and I have also met a holocaust survivor by the name of Rudi when he came into the school I was working in to give a talk to the children; Didn't seem like such a silly name then.

AbeFroman · 08/03/2019 21:36

I like it! Know a 3 year old Rudy and he really suits it

Sessy19 · 09/03/2019 06:24

@missbrightside09, don’t feel you need to defend your son’s name...look how overwhelmingly positive the responses are!! 😊

Not everyone will be supportive, but when a quirkier name is mentioned, a significant number of parents recoil because they wouldn’t dare imagine naming their child from outside the top 10!

It is a really good name. It’s strong and masculine. I suspect many of those who have expressed concern (well, just 123Flopsy, really, who seems to be particularly troubled by it!) have either been subject to name mocking themselves and have very popular samey names for their own kids. And that is fine. It’s what keeps the world turning!

I absolutely love it, but I'm a big ska/reggae fan. I've come across a few Rudy's over the years, most of them down south, always middle class, quite cool parents but not too radical. If that sounds like you, go for it Wink. I'm not as keen on the spelling Rudi, though it is that way in Rudi Can't Fail.

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 13/03/2019 10:51

I really like it.

aliceandkids77 · 13/03/2019 12:04

I know a dog with this name so now I see it as a dog name lol. I think Rudy is actually super cute tho!

Improve12 · 13/03/2019 13:02

Great name. Some names evoke a certain feeling, taste or something sensory. Rudy feels efficient. It doesn't sound lethargic.

Sessy19 · 14/03/2019 06:26

@Improve12, I think I actually know what you mean! There’s some energy in the name. I appreciate your view 😊

I know three babies called Rudy, I think it’s a great name if a bit popular here!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/03/2019 06:42

I only know one, he's 11 and a pretty cool kid.

If you like it, do it Smile

PerdHapley · 14/03/2019 06:49

I am aware of the rudies/farts connection, though no-one I know uses it. The fact that it exists is enough to put me off though.

However, I mainly dislike it because it's basically the word 'rude', which is not a label anyone wants for their child.

I actually have an eight year old nephew called Rudy, and I thought that it would grow on me because I love him, but I still think his name is absolutely horrible, sadly.

Oh, and PPs mentioned loads of people going out of the way to comment positively on their unusual name choice for their child. Some of those are genuine, but some are for sure a very British way of trying to disguise a surprise and dislike - and yes, probably judgement - of a name that they consider pretty awful. I've definitely done this myself, and I know lots of others do this too. In fact, specifically with the name Rudy was when I saw this in action - everyone cooing over the new baby (fair enough, he was gorgeous) and exclaiming "oh how lovely and unusual!" When his name was revealed, but then several widened eyes and thrown glances happened out of the parent's sight.

Cobblersandhogwash · 14/03/2019 10:38

I guess part of naming your child is really not giving a shit about what other people think. Eye rolling or side glances etc. Who cares?

Bumblebeesmum · 14/03/2019 10:48

I’d care how people would react to my child’s name - it’s their identity not my fashion accessory.

The comment about parents all wanting top 10 is ridiculous given the current trend is to try and be as unique as possible meaning that most parents veto anything anyone else might possibly have. Thousands of names registered a year as a result which wasn’t the case in previous generations. Far fewer kids than ever before have a ‘top ten’ name - particularly girls.

Sessy19 · 14/03/2019 11:50

Sorry if my comment hit a nerve, @Bumblebeesmum.

The same names have shuffled around in the top ten for over 5yrs in the UK, so I’m not sure that your comment is even interesting, let alone relevant

Bumblebeesmum · 14/03/2019 12:11

Sessy no the apology is mine as I realise you have a relative with this name so understandably defensive. But statistically it’s simply untrue that everyone wants top ten names - I have a bit of a love of all things statistics (autistic accountant...) so hard not to respond to comments that are simply untrue. The top ten names are a significantly smaller % of overall babies registered than ever before, because the current fashion is to be unique.

Op I actually really like the name Rudolph - I met an adult one in a former work place & it struck me as unusual but nice. Rudy isn’t too my taste at all but it won’t be out of place in their generation. Just not sure I’d do Rude Willy

Bumblebeesmum · 14/03/2019 12:17

I’ve got my posters mixed up ! Sorry op I didn’t realise it was you saying you find opinions on your opinion seeking thread uninteresting Grin

Rudy is fine but you seem quite hostile to anyone not agreeing with you so posting things like this probably isn’t the right move....

Buggins1984 · 14/03/2019 12:18

I like Rudy

I dont know why anyone wouldny like it i think its a lovely name. I dont think i would use it as it wouldnt go with our last name or my sons name but i do think its adorable. You cant win on here, a name is either 'too common' 'too chavvy' or some other immature response. I think go for it, its your child!

Bumblebeesmum · 14/03/2019 20:53

The British Baby Names website lists all the births announced in the Telegraph & Times etc. - I noticed a recent Rudy on there - although a girl.

Sessy19 · 14/03/2019 21:40

Rudy is listed on that site as a boys name as well in fact.

I know a rather nice little boy called Rudy, who has made me think of it as a cute enough name, but I'm not sure whether it will work so well in adulthood. It sounds a bit... "jokey" maybe?
