What do you think of Ismay for a girl? I used to know a girl called this and think it’s really pretty, but I’ve never heard it anywhere else. Has anyone else ever met an Ismay?

How about Esmay?

That looks nicer and has only one pronunciation (unlike Esme which is often pronounced Es-me in English).

BlueMerchant · 01/03/2019 08:02

I don't like it. Looks and sounds wrong to me.

BluebellsareBlue · 01/03/2019 08:04

It's a surname isn't it? I think of bruce ismay from the titanic

Beluga2019 · 01/03/2019 09:16

I’m not mad keen on Esme actually, plus I’d pronounce that Ez-mee.

Mercy and Bike Yay, some yeses! Glad I’m not the only one who likes it but from these responses I’m fairly sure we won’t be using it Sad

If you like the way it sounds you could always go with Izzy-May or Izzy-Mae

Beluga2019 · 01/03/2019 11:19

Tinkly Wow, a real life Ismay! Love it.

Not a fan of hyphenated names, but thanks for the suggestion

I knew someone called Ismay; I think it’s quite a nice name and totally different from Esme.

RockinHippy · 01/03/2019 13:03

I knew a French Ismay when I was younger, she was a lovely, elegant & feisty woman.

As I said above, if you love it, ignore the nay sayers. You'll always get that with unusual names, they tend to be marmite names. Plenty of people hated DDs name which was very unusual when she was born, only slightly less so now. She's only ever met 2 others, 1 of which was named after her & the other weirdly was her best friend when small. She loves her name, it suits her so well & everyone frequently comments on her lovely name now. She's never had anything negative & it's now better known as a name. Times change quickly with names, go with what you like & what feels right for your D.C.

Thank you Rockin for the words of encouragement!

I only know of it as a surname, and as above I immediately thought Titanic. It's likely she'd be shortened to Izzy with all the other Isabella's and variants, but if you like it, go for it!

MumUnderTheMoon · 04/03/2019 09:19

It means beloved and I think it sounds lovely but I don't like how it looks written down what about Ismae?

Fabellini · 04/03/2019 09:25

Makes me think of this lovely lady...

Ismay?

My immediate thought was that it looks like Ms in pig Latin.
