Help me choose a baby girl name

We’re really struggling to choose a name for our little girl! Let me know your favorites from our list. I’ve added our reservations that are holding us back from all of them.

Evelina - too long/ made up?
Phoebe - strange spelling?
Gracie - unsuitable for an adult/ professional job?
Rosie - boring?
Ivy - poison ivy/ IV drip?

The only one I really like is Phoebe. I think the others are twee/overused.

Gobletoffire · 28/02/2019 12:48

I really like Phoebe from your list. If it helps at all my friend has a Phoebe who is now 3, she was worried about using the name in case it was misspelled but she’s never had a problem x

Halloumimuffin · 28/02/2019 14:44

Gracie is the nicest out of those

mumofthehs · 02/03/2019 21:41

I have a Phoebe, we have no problems with anyone knowing how to pronounce it and at 4 she is able to spell it to anyone who isn't sure :)

Smoliver · 02/03/2019 22:33

Evelina - Gorgeous name. I follow somebody online who has a daughter named Evelina, and she's beautiful.
Phoebe - Lovely name, never had an issue with the way it's spelt.
Gracie - Not a fan really. Much prefer Grace.
Rosie - I like this name too, not as much as Evelina or Phoebe
Ivy - I do think of the IV drip when I hear this name sadly. Otherwise, this name is lovely.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 02/03/2019 22:37

Evelina is a hospital for sick children - I really don’t think you can use it as the hospital is just getting bigger and bigger

Phoebe or grace are lovely. You can’t name a baby Gracie but it’s fine for a nn.

Phoebe grace or grace ivy would be my picks!

CookieSwirlC · 03/03/2019 08:07

Evelina is a beautiful name, I’ve not heard of it before but it’s lovely.

I have a a Phoebe. Never had an issue with pronunciation but she does sometimes get Pheobe or Feebee spellings from her classmates/other parents. She has been able to spell her name since she was 3ish though and always corrects people.

Gracie - Is a bit twee and a nickname to me
Rosie - Again a bit twee
Ivy - quite like it but very popular at the minute.

TeaChocolateandPeonies · 03/03/2019 10:17

Evelina - definitely not made up! And by far my favourite. Pretty, but substantial with lots of nickname options if you’re so inclined. But I’m biased as I have one. And there are plenty of hospitals named after a real person, so for me that’s a non issue.

Phoebe - lovely.

Gracie - a bit twee and I’ve never liked the name Grace.

Rosie - a gorgeous nickname, but I prefer a more substantial name so she would have options. I adore Rose.

Ivy - I’m pretty neutral on.

Littlebird88 · 03/03/2019 10:19

grace on birth certificate but nickname gracie

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 11:05

Evelina is pretty but you will get everyone in the south of England say ‘like the hospital’. And for anyone who has had a child there it will have massive negative connotations-I wouldn’t want my daughter associated with that. Having a sick child is the worst time in anyone’s life - why would you name your child after that?
To me it’s like calling your child great ormand street

FogCutter · 03/03/2019 11:09

Like ivy and Phoebe best.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 11:16

Also there is Evelyn and Evangeline which are similar but don’t remind people of their kids being sick!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 11:29

Anyway tea and chocolate - to you it might be a ‘non issue’ but anyone who has watched their child undergo cancer treatment, or heart surgery or be in intensive care there after a car crash or worse died would see differently and would think you are pretty crass and insensitive for naming your child it.

TeaChocolateandPeonies · 03/03/2019 12:40

Woah red sky! I’m very sorry you have such negative associations with the name, but to be clear, I named my child after a book - one that existed before the hospital.
I understand it’s a less used name in the UK therefore your only association may be the hospital, which is why you wouldn’t use it, however to accuse me of being crass and insensitive is pretty unfair. I spent a lot of my childhood in the RVI (royal Victoria infirmary) and don’t think anyone who named their child Victoria is insensitive, I just wouldn’t use it as it reminds me of a hideous time for me. There will always be someone who has a negative association with a name, be it a school bully, an abusive relative etc but it doesn’t stop their name being a legimate, nice name for others. Again, I’m sorry you were offended by my comment, but I still don’t see it as an issue and it has never been mentioned about my daughters name.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 03/03/2019 12:54

Evangeline is pretty good. I like that

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 14:04

Thank you Tea - I think the fact I had raised it as a no and you had dismissed it as ‘non issue’ upset me. I think it def would feel like an issue to many parents. I wouldn’t mind someone calling their child evelina but they should be sensitive to the fact that many people are sensitive about it.
Evelina is a very uncommon name. Victoria is everywhere hence there isn’t just the one association. I’d think monarch and Victoria tube line before any hospital.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 14:05

And if I knew you in real life I wouldn’t mention it either to your face. If I did say ‘like the hospital’ and you said it was a non issue to me I would probably go home and shed a few tears though. The name has very negative connotations for many.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/03/2019 14:06

They won’t always tell you.

Vestlandet · 03/03/2019 22:54

Definitely Rosie
