We have decided on Vinnie/Vinny for baby but can't decide if we should use Vincent on the BC? If we aren't planning on calling him Vincent ever will it just cause confusion when applying for things, legal documents etc? Also not sure which spelling for Vinnie/Vinny? Thanks

I always think it's better to have a more grown-up formal name on the BC, cutsey nn for day to day use. If you're never, ever going to use Vincent, then it probably will be confusing to have that on the BC.

Vinnie

sharpstick · 27/02/2019 11:23

I would use Vinny. For some reason Vinnie looks a bit more feminine to me.

No, I wouldn’t use Vincent. If you aren’t going to use it I don’t see the point. I have a full name on my birth certificate and have never ever used it, I’m always the diminutive, even as an adult. We live in a world of little Alfies, Freddys, Lexies and Evies, these are the ordinary names of that generation, no full names needed.

I regret the fact that I was convinced to use the longer name for one of my children 9 years ago. So at least think carefully about the fact that this name will follow your baby forever as they grow, and if you like it enough to see it you on school certificates and other places.

RuthW · 27/02/2019 12:00

Please use the full name on birth cert. Vinnie on a cv doesn't sound good.

Quintella · 27/02/2019 13:30

Put Vincent on his birth cert. You may not ever plan on using it but he well might. Vinnie and Vincent have very different vibes. Vinnie is cute (but also mobsterish. Yo Vinnie!) whereas Vincent is a nice internationally used name that would never embarrass you.

shivbo2014 · 27/02/2019 16:21

Thanks for the replies! I do actually like the name Vincent and wouldn't mind it being used, so think im leaning towards putting it on the bc.

Vincent is a super name and it's a shame to downgrade it to Vinnie, I think. I'd put Vincent on the BC.

RiverTam · 27/02/2019 16:25

Vincent is a gazillion times nicer than Vinnie/y so I would just use that! Vinnie/Vinny is awful!

needthisthread · 27/02/2019 16:41

I would never put a different name on a birth certificate to the one I was actually calling the child. It seems such a bizarre thing to do. Call them one thing but actually, legally, name them something else?

123Flopsy · 27/02/2019 17:53

Vincent is a great name!

Please don't shorten it. It's so easy to say.

123Flopsy · 27/02/2019 17:55

We live in a world of little Alfies, Freddys, Lexies and Evies

But these little ones will grow up one day and appreciate being named Alfred, Frederick, Alexandra and Evelyn!

Tenpole · 27/02/2019 18:02

Full name.

DollyWilde · 27/02/2019 18:03

Full name - how would you feel though if he went by Vince when older?

shivbo2014 · 27/02/2019 20:50

Not sure how to reply to individual posts. I think if he wants to call himself Vince later on then thats fine. (Although Im not keen on Vince) Thats kind of why I wanted to use Vincent to give him the option! Thanks, I think we have decided on Vincent with Joseph as a middle name.

OP posts:
Quintella · 27/02/2019 21:03

Vincent Joseph is a great name. Good luck!

DollyWilde · 27/02/2019 22:40

Ah, he’ll always be Vinny to his mum Smile

Agree Vincent Joseph is a fab name!
