Sibling names

We are expecting out first child in Sept and have a few name ideas for both sexes.

There are 2 girls names we love which to me are quite opposite in similarity. On the girl side, one is Clementine and the other is Luna.

Obviously we will only choose one and my husband says whichever we don't use (if we have a girl), if we are fortunate enough to have another girl in the future we could use the remaining one on her.

I am not sure as siblings the 2 names compliment or marry up to one another? 2 sisters named Clementine and Luna.

I know the whole thing is based on hypothetical scenarios as we may even have a boy anyway, or 1x girl 1xboy, but based on this hypothetical scenario, what are everyone's thoughts?

Thank you x

If i saw the two names together as sisters i wouldnt raise an eyebrow to be honest. I think its more likely to stand out as odd if names are very similar to each to each other, either in sound or looking similar written down etc. Me and my sister couldnt have names any further apart, she's an Emma and mine is so uncommon and nothing like emma that everyone i meet has never heard of my name and i am yet to meet another me in my 30 years of life lol.
I named my son a fairly common name (Charlie) but the name i have picked for my second is something less common and very different sounding although nowhere near as dodgy as mine.
Although im not a fan of Clementine when i say them together i think they would go together just fine if things worked out that way :)

They are of a very different style, so it's slightly odd to use them for siblings, IMO, but it doesn't really matter if you like them. Could you think about Selene/Selena, the Greek goddess of the moon, rather than Luna, the Roman one? That's a much better match, I think.

BlueMerchant · 26/02/2019 12:15

They are different I agree. I would expect a Clementine to have a more traditional sister although they are both nice names.( I love older traditional names but prefer Luna in this instance). I agree that if they are too matching/ similar it sounds ridiculous too.

I don’t like either name but see no issue in sisters having them.

It’s a relatively short period where your children go by X and Y. Most of their lives they will be independent of each other

BlueMerchant · 26/02/2019 12:29

Good point Stinkytoe. I've never thought of it like that.

implantsandaDyson · 26/02/2019 15:51

I wouldn't worry about them going together. And to be honest names that I had thought of when I had my first child never made the shortlist for my later kid, even ones I loved. I also agree with stinkytoe I have three daughters between 7 and 13 and I very rarely say or write their names altogether now.
Fwiw I quite like both names.

Susannach · 26/02/2019 15:51

I actually think they sound like natural sisters. Both pretty, slightly quirky/hipster, nature-inspired names that are known but not too often heard.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/02/2019 17:17

I think they go well personally.

Dontrocktheboat · 26/02/2019 17:49

I think they go quite well, better than matching names and both a little bit different.
I do like Luna, but I’ve heard it’s v popular for dogs at the moment which may put me off a bit!

Quintella · 26/02/2019 17:49

You're overthinking it. It wouldn't occur to me that the two names didn't 'go' together.

If you do have another daughter three years down the line you may well find your taste has changed and you'll plump for another name anyway.

MumUnderTheMoon · 26/02/2019 19:50

I think they're great together. I wouldn't hold on to one though I'd just call dd Luna Clementine.

Phphion · 26/02/2019 20:16

I think they are fine together. I think the sibling issue is only really when names are too similar or themey, e.g. Leo, Cleo and Theo, or where they are very, very different, e.g. James, Catherine and Tiger.

MercyBodle · 27/02/2019 09:46

I think they sound good as sisters. And both are lovely names btw!

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 27/02/2019 13:59

I think they go really well together to be honest!

I would expect clementine would get shortened a lot, to clem or clemmie.

I think Clemmie and Luna sound really nice together!
