Avalon

Sister to Marnie. I like it (Roxy Music, Arthurian times, apples, islands etc) in theory but something puts me off. Is it too close to "Avon"? Does it sound like a detergent or UPVC window manufacturer? Gah! Confused

Bryan Ferry springs to mind first, then Glastonbury Tor, which always smells of wee to me.

Guinevere?

JasonGideon · 26/02/2019 08:12

I know an Avalon named after the beach in Sydney.

123Flopsy · 26/02/2019 10:11

Avalon sounds masculine.

Avalona or Avalone?

daisypond · 26/02/2019 10:15

I don't see why it sounds masculine. Girls' names don't need to end in A or E. It's no different to names like Marion, Alison, and loads more.

123Flopsy · 26/02/2019 13:50

True, but my first guess would still be boy. That's because I've never met an Avalon and to my ears it sounds masculine.

Rabbitjam · 26/02/2019 13:56

I know a man called avalon, nn is avi. It suits him.

Antonin · 26/02/2019 14:11

Avalone sounds like abalone or baloney

Antonin · 26/02/2019 14:12

What about Evalone or Avalynn

Antonin · 26/02/2019 14:13

Avery and Marnie go together

PetuliaBlavatsky · 26/02/2019 14:17

We live in Somerset and there are umpteen companies around here called Avalon something-or-other. Avalon motors, Avalon taxis, Avalon waste etc etc etc. Glad you have reconsidered!

MikeUniformMike · 26/02/2019 14:20

How about Camelot?

SleeplessAndHopeless · 26/02/2019 15:03

I'm reading (and loving!) your comments and I keep flip flipping on whether I still like it or not. We're in a post-industrial town north west of England so not many hippies amongst these derelict mills, but I definitely take all your points on board. Also sounds like Avaline, as is her from the sitcom Bread. Damn.

I started life in a post-industrial town in north-west England and still ended up in Somerset. You never know what will happen!

SleeplessAndHopeless · 26/02/2019 15:51

Very fair point! Grin Do you know anyone called Camelot...?

trulybadlydeeply · 26/02/2019 15:58

If you want something Arthurian, how about Guinevere? Or what about Myrlin? I'm not sure if it is a version of Merlin, or a completely different derivation.

Dontrocktheboat · 26/02/2019 17:54

I knew an Avalon at uni (who possibly had been named by 1970s wannabe hippies as suggested by a previous poster). It seemed very glamorous and bohemian - I quite like it, but it does seem like a name that might be chosen as a brand name, and also a bit less striking now amidst a plethora of Ava’s, which is quite similar.

trulybadlydeeply · 26/02/2019 17:58

There was a Morwenna on The Chase just now, that would go very well with Marnie, IMHO.

MikeUniformMike · 26/02/2019 18:23

Strangely enough, I don't know anyone called Camelot.
I believe Eden can be a boy's or a girl's name.
Avalon would be a house name, I think.
I know of a Lancelot.

Bohbell · 27/02/2019 18:57

Love all the Artharian names. tBF, many names rhyme with something shit. I love Gwendoline and wanted it for my DD but DH stopped it.

Bohbell · 27/02/2019 18:58

When you have ppl calling kids Bear, its proof you can just do what the heck you like.

costacoffeecup · 27/02/2019 21:39

Elaine is a nice Arthurian name.

Historydweeb · 27/02/2019 21:49

How about Fae. As in the fae or faerie folk

Ipanema01 · 28/02/2019 14:08

There is an Avalon in my office who has a gorgeous exotic surname too, I always think what a fab name! I like unusual but I couldn't personally pull it off I don't think.

Bumblebeesmum · 02/03/2019 10:24

It’s cream isn’t it ? Think it’s awful sorry.

What about Avery ?

Switsy · 02/03/2019 10:56

Avery reminds me of doing mail merges.
