Not pregnant but just discovered this name and completely love it!
Breagh, it means beautiful in gaelic which I love! Haven't seen it on any name sites etc which is surprising so wondering if I'm missing something? Could also spell it Brea I suppose but prefer the original way.

ElspethFlashman · 23/02/2019 22:18

It's not pronounced Bree Ah.

Its pronounced Bra. As in underwire bra.

WanderingTrolley1 · 23/02/2019 22:19

Sorry, but it’s awful.

Didyeeaye · 23/02/2019 22:21

ElspethFlashman Really? Ive just read a couple naming sites and pronounce name sites that all say Bree-ah?

RLOU30 · 23/02/2019 22:22

I think it looks ugly and it doesn’t sound too precious either tbh. Sorry 😐

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 23/02/2019 22:24

Elspeth is right, it would pronounced Bra or maaaaybe Bray (as in Lough Neagh).

It's not an authentic Irish name.

ElspethFlashman · 23/02/2019 22:26

I'm Irish. I can speak Irish. Seriously, it's Bra.

I'm presuming those sites are American and clueless.

LivLemler · 23/02/2019 22:26

Yes, in Irish it would be Brea and pronounced bra.

A lot of naming sites spout pure shite about Irish names. There are plenty of Irish posters on here though to help, including some fluent and native Irish speakers.

Pishogue · 23/02/2019 22:26

Nobody should take the slightest notice of those naming sites which invent names, etymologies and pronunciations.

I don't know Scots Gaelic, but in Irish, yes, the equivalent (breá) is pronounced, roughly, 'bra'.

Why would you choose a name from a language you don't speak, and then think you can switch around the spelling? Hmm

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 23/02/2019 22:26

I've just checked with DH (fluent Irish speaker) and he says it means fine- as in acceptable, "I'm fine"

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2019 22:27

I'm fairly sure that in Irish, Breagh would rhyme with Bray.

It really isn't an authentic Irish name, I've certainly never come across it anyway.

Didyeeaye · 23/02/2019 22:29

Lol Ok fair enough. I was thinking it was similar to the likes of Orlagh etc that's basically pronouncing the first part with 'gh' silent.
Nonetheless, that's that notion crushed!

AuntieStella · 23/02/2019 22:29

It's a Scottish name, isn't if? That's the only place I've come across it (Highlands).

Pronounced Bree-a (nn Bree)

I like it.

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2019 22:29

Oops, I'll have to defer to the native Irish speakers on here - bra, not bray Blush

ElspethFlashman · 23/02/2019 22:30

Yeah the phrase "go brea" means "grand/fine"

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 23/02/2019 22:31

In Scotland it is pronounced Bree-ah I think it’s lovely I know two one with a more simplified spelling.

Didyeeaye · 23/02/2019 22:32

Pishogue Calm yer jets.. Like I said Im not actually pregnant so was commenting on it being pretty as just saw it in a book. I'm scottish if that helps but tbh I think folk can name their child whatever they like even without any relevant heritage. My name is Hebrew for example...

OP posts:
Pishogue · 23/02/2019 22:33

I think the OP's fake name site meant Scots Gaelic. Which it mispronounced, anyway.

Yes, it means fine in Irish. You'd say 'Tá an lá go breá' for 'it's a fine day.'

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 23/02/2019 22:33

If you google it comes up as a Scots Gaelic name no idea about Irish but it’s not unusual in the Highlands.

ElspethFlashman · 23/02/2019 22:34

No it's not the "gh". It's the "agh". The gh doesn't exist alone. So it's not that the gh is silent, it's that agh or eagh = ah. It's not silent letters really, it's just a group of letters that sound like one letter.

That probably makes no sense whatsoever, lol.

Didyeeaye · 23/02/2019 22:34

Thanks AuntieStella and Looksbetter Thought I was going mad there lol

NOHOLIDAYS · 23/02/2019 22:35

It's Breagha in scottish gaelic pronounced Bree-ah. I think it's a lovely name.

Bumblebeesmum · 23/02/2019 22:55

I think it’s hideous irrespective of heritage or pronounciation

WitBeyondMeasure · 24/02/2019 00:07

I personally veto names that sound anything like the sound one makes whilst vomiting.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 24/02/2019 00:18

Seeing it written down I wouldn't know how to pronounce it.
Bree-g or maybe Bree-a-g

But if it's pronounced Bra then it's probably not something you want to name your daughter.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 24/02/2019 00:19

If you want to call her Bria then spell it like that
