Don't do it unless you are a multi millionaire whose child no one will ever tease.

What about Arthur, which could be derived from artos the Celtic for bear?

amrscot · 22/02/2019 19:32

@AdaColeman we actually said we liked Arthur!

It was hugely popular about 5 years ago, along with Teddy funnily enough! I think it's very much 'of its time' though and people have moved on. I like Bruno. How about official name Bruno, Bear as a nickname while he's a baby?

amrscot · 22/02/2019 19:35

Don't like the name Bruno

Where I'm from Bear (well Bjørn) is a quite normal name and I don't see anything wrong with it. It's your kid, do as you want 😊

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/02/2019 19:41

Ooo there are loads of names meaning bear look:

Luckingfovely · 22/02/2019 19:41

I bloody love it. If I had another DS I would it for sure.

But then my DC have what mn consider unusual names anyway!

Fraula · 22/02/2019 19:42

I like it! Maybe team with a more standard middle name. I also love Arthur.

daisypond · 22/02/2019 19:44

I like some of the alternatives from Smile's link above - much more useable and less faddy.

Kokeshi123 · 22/02/2019 19:55

Have you considered Badger or Armadillo?

Cbeebiesrehab · 22/02/2019 20:06

Use it as a middle name and then it can be a cute nn when he’s young but he has a more serious name to go by when/if he wants to.

erja · 22/02/2019 20:14

I love it! Pushed so hard for it for DS but DP said no.

RainyDaysSunnyNights · 22/02/2019 21:05

If you have to ask...

pipanchew2 · 22/02/2019 21:14

I find helpful to try and imagine them with the name at all different life stages. 2yo Bear is cute, does it still work at 45 and 90? I like the suggestion of using as a pet name: best of both worlds then....

IHaveBrilloHair · 22/02/2019 21:21

No matter what you name him, you can always call him Bear at home.
Nicknames happen, my Dd is Niamh but amongst others, she's been Noo Noo, and Mr Daniel!

penisbeakers · 22/02/2019 21:23

Unless you're a Native American, then it's a very bad idea.

GreenWingers · 22/02/2019 21:30

Don't usually like "out there" names but I actually quite like this one.Blush Don't use it as a name though, use it as a nickname.

GreenWingers · 22/02/2019 21:31

Also:
3 year old Bear- oh bless
43 year old Bear- oh dear

Quintella · 22/02/2019 22:41

I'd assume parents of a kid called Bear were just really into emulating B List celebs. Cheryl Many-Surnames has a son called Bear and I'm sure Jamie Oliver does too. It just seems faddy and not half as original as people might think.

Quintella · 22/02/2019 22:45

When the Daily Mail has noticed the name Bear is now a thing...

babysharkah · 22/02/2019 22:46

Term of endearment fine, middle name, fine but imagine meeting your solicitor or a judge or any professional called bear it just doesn't work.

TrentBridge · 22/02/2019 22:52

We have an Arthur who is often called Bear as a nickname. Doubt we'll be doing it when he's 40!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/02/2019 22:58

Put Edward on his birth certificate. Call him Bear. Fill all forms in as “Edward (Bear) Smith” and he can be known as Bear.

Until he hits 14 and then he can re-style himself as Ed.

PCohle · 22/02/2019 23:47

I think Bear is cute in a kid but really weird as a 35 year old skinny accountant.

kkkaren7 · 22/02/2019 23:48

Are u drunk
