I was reading another thread where the name Demi was mentioned and it reminded me how much I've always loved the name Demelza which could be shortened to Demi. I have a Joseph and Susannah. Before I pitch it to DH am I being bonkers?

A little.
Haha.

Joseph and susannah are nice classic names. I don’t feel that Demi suits.

Antonin · 22/02/2019 01:26

Demelza was a popular back when the original TV series was screened. I know a woman called that who use be nearly middle aged by now. Trad Cornish name used for centuries in the West Country.
Of course. Demi is a relatively young name which was made up by the actor’s mother, but perfectly acceptable as a nn

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2019 01:44

Maybe just a bit bonkers Grin But actually I think Demelza is a gorgeous name, and very traditionally Cornish. I reckon with DC3 you can go a bit more out there - I did, just a bit but the name has got popular since, dammit

Tavannach · 22/02/2019 01:49

Demelza is lovely. I've never heard it before.

MercyBodle · 22/02/2019 07:51

Demelza is gorgeous and with Poldark being re-made over past couple of years I assume Demelza is on an upswing at the moment. Demi is great as a nn, and I love it with your other children's names. Why on earth would it be bonkers?

Bumblebeesmum · 22/02/2019 08:45

I’ve never heard of it

BlueMerchant · 22/02/2019 08:49

I personally don't like it at all and definitely wouldn't use 'Demi'. I don't like it with Joseph and Susannah either.

IHeartKingThistle · 22/02/2019 09:44

I work with one and I really like it.

TatianaLarina · 22/02/2019 09:45

Yes.

Demi is a celebrity name and calling a child after Poldark is toe-curling.

Joseph and Susannah are classics, I’d go for something in the same vein.

JaretsGirlfren · 22/02/2019 09:52

It’s better than ‘Hormones’ which is originally what I thought you were suggesting! Grin

daisypond · 22/02/2019 10:23

Demelza is nice but will be associated with Poldark for ever. I don't like Demi at all - it means half, so seems a bit belittling, but for a nickname it's fine.

Quintella · 22/02/2019 13:53

Demi is bad. Demelza is okayish but too Poldark related. It would have been workable if there hadn't been the recent adaptation but people will just think you've had one too many swoony moments watching Ross and Demelza Grin (Full confession: My brother is named after the 1970s Ross. Grin)

What about Kerenza? That's pretty, and Cornish too I think.

BurtTyrannosaurusMacklin · 22/02/2019 13:57

I associate it with Demelza House children's hospices in Kent I'm afraid! Fairly localised association though so likely not an issue for most of the world!

somersetblue · 22/02/2019 14:11

Go for it, it’s a proper name, personally I prefer Demelza To Demi. She could even shorten it to Ellie if she likes.

Neolara · 22/02/2019 14:14

For a moment I thought you were considering calling your dc "Hormones". That would have been a no from me.

NotMyUsualTopBilling · 22/02/2019 14:22

My friend has a Demi, not a name I'd use personally but I don't think it's that bad.

PinkBuffalo · 22/02/2019 14:30

I know someone whose a demelza but has always been known as Demi. It's always been fine!
(I also thought you were suggesting hormones Grin)

Sophronia · 22/02/2019 22:55

Demelza is lovely but Demi is bad. I’d shorten Demelza to Elza/Elzie or Melly.

NuffSaidSam · 22/02/2019 23:15

I think it sounds like a witch from a Disney film!
