Mathieson as a first name

Mathieson is a family surname but has come to an end with DH's dad (DH was adopted and has a different surname). If this baby is a boy we have been intending to use it as a middle name but were discussing it today and now thinking maybe a first name. Does it work as a first name? I'm not overly keen on surnames as first names but am starting to quite like it Our own surname also begins with an M.

Tia!

sorry - but Fridge Raiders and other processed meat snacks...

redhat · 20/02/2019 18:08

like the sausage? Mmm Mattesson

olderthanyouthink · 20/02/2019 18:09

We were thinking of using a dying surname as a first name but baby was a girl and it didn't seem like a girl name.

Mathieson sounds American to me, but hard to spell and will be called Mattie/y but I don't hate it... I think it would grow on me maybe

redhat · 20/02/2019 18:10

I would advise against it. Ds2 has a dying surname as one of his middle names and I now cringe a bit thinking people will think its just one of those made up names.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/02/2019 18:12

Not good.

Bumblebeesmum · 20/02/2019 18:12

The ‘son’ usually means ‘son of’ & added at some point to a surname - but this makes it sound very surname like

I don’t think it’s awful and haven’t heard of the brand others mention - but could you consider the original (Hebrew / biblical) name Matthias ?

olderthanyouthink · 20/02/2019 18:13

Matteson -> Mat-teh-son
Mathieson -> Mathy-son

Right?

Matthew or Matthias would be a nod to the name?

daisypond · 20/02/2019 18:53

I'm not usually a fan of surnames as names, but I think it's OK, actually.

KateTTC123 · 20/02/2019 19:36

I love it but I usually like surnames as first names. My ds is Harris and I would love to call this baby Maclean but it's been vetoed

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 20/02/2019 19:40

Awful as a first name.

MikeUniformMike · 20/02/2019 19:52

Use it as a first name or middle name. The reason is nice and it can be shortened to Mat/Matt/Math.

BrizzleMint · 20/02/2019 19:53

The processed meat snacks was my first thought too, sorry OP.

Antonin · 20/02/2019 20:52

I don’t usually go for surnames as first names but I do like Mathieson.
Your DS can tell people it’s a family name.
As an adult, he can call himself Mat if he so chooses
It sounds very distinguished

youllhavehadyourtea · 20/02/2019 20:53

I like it.

But I'm Scottish, so it sounds quite ok to my ears.

greendale17 · 20/02/2019 20:54

Character from Homeland tv show
Processed meat company

Awful name to give someone

Littleelffriend · 20/02/2019 20:57

Smoked sausage is all I picture

3out · 20/02/2019 21:00

It’s fine, but sounds rather like Maddison.

MumUnderTheMoon · 20/02/2019 23:12

I think it's a lovely first name but I do prefer Mathis I think it's a bit "cooler".

lottiegarbanzo · 20/02/2019 23:18

No.

Mattie's son? Matthew's son? Why not just call him Matthew?

Mmm, Mattison... processed meat products.

goldengummybear · 20/02/2019 23:21

I think that his name will be mistaken for Maddison over the phone etc

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 20/02/2019 23:31

It's a surname to me, I'm Scottish and know a few folk with that as their last name so I would find it a bit odd as a first name. It's a good strong solid name tho and can easily be shortened to Mat etc.

Whoops75 · 20/02/2019 23:34

Mathis is nice

Not a fan of the full name but the sentiment is lovely.

AlliKaneErikson · 21/02/2019 11:44

I think it’s fine! (I have a Harrison, and I know quite a few people on MN aren’t fans).
