Yes Brizzle. Rowan is definitely a male name, only recently started being used for girls.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 19/02/2019 12:14

My ds is Roan.

BrizzleMint · 19/02/2019 12:21

How do you pronounce Roan? I've heard it pronounced the same as Rowan but I thought it was pronounced to rhyme with bone and scone (not scon!)

Kukumbr · 19/02/2019 12:22

I love Ronan or the more popular Roman that some people use nowadays. Really don’t like Rowan. I love Rory, beautiful name

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 19/02/2019 12:28

Ro an without a 'w' sound!!
He is 17 and loves his name!

Bitchfromhell · 19/02/2019 12:30

Definitely Rowan, nearly called ds that. Ronan is boyzone to me.

Antonin · 19/02/2019 12:36

I think the trad feminine version of Rowan is Rowena. Rowan for a girl is very recent and infrequent

3timeslucky · 19/02/2019 12:37

I would assume a Rowan was a girl.

I don't particularly like Ronan - maybe because I've known two of them and wish I'd never met either.

Antonin · 19/02/2019 12:38

I feel Rowan has more “class” somehow.
Have you thought of Rowland?

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2019 12:40

Rowan

BrizzleMint · 19/02/2019 13:07

Rowland Rat!

Roman gets a bit fat no from me, I have only ever met one Roman and he was the most obnoxious teenager I have had the misfortune to meet the apple doesn't fall far from the tree

EntirelyAnonymised · 19/02/2019 13:10

Rowan for me

Marcipex · 19/02/2019 13:40

Rowan only recently used for girls? How recently do you mean?
My dd is Rowan, named after a friend who is now mid 50s.
There's a well known school series,( think Malory Towers etc ) with a female Rowan, written in the 1940s.

Anyway, Rowan for a girl, Rohan for a boy. A Rowan is a little flowering tree, not very macho.

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2019 13:44

Rowan Williams and Rowan Atkinson did ok with the name.
Rohan is a range of clothing.
Roman? Polanski.
Ronan? Keating.

MayFayner · 19/02/2019 13:47

Rowan.

I don’t find it feminine in the least.

Name records show vastly more male than female Rowans so I think there’s a bit of defensiveness going on on this thread!

And save me from anything “macho”!

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2019 13:50

Roan is an adjective that describes an animal's coat colour. It's pronounced Rone.

RiverTam · 19/02/2019 13:55

there was a girl character in a school story series called Rowan back in the 1940s (Antonia Forest). Now, she did give another girl character a boy's name (Lawrie) but that was all made clear in the books. The fact that no mention was made of Rowan's name being male suggests to me that in the 1940s Rowan was an accepted girls' name.

Rowan Pelling (woman editor of The Erotic Review) also comes to mind.

It's a tree at the end of the day, isn't it?!

Marcipex · 19/02/2019 14:03

Interesting..now I've looked it up and there are twice as many male Rowans.
It must be a regional thing. I know six female Rowans and one male. Four of the girls are Rowan Elizabeth. The male Rowan is quite high profile though,as he is very spirited and his mother is constantly shouting his name.
I didn't know Rohan was a clothing brand, I was thinking of the horsemen in TLOTR.
Ronan is okay, a saints name.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 19/02/2019 14:05

Rowan

I don't really like Ronan.

I also know a Rohan.

RiverTam · 19/02/2019 14:15

I also know a Rohan.

Is he called Theoden King? Or Eomer?

IamPickleRick · 19/02/2019 14:16

Rowan is the girl who was up for sacrifice in the Wicker Man, that’s the only time I’ve ever heard it used for a girl.

I really like it for either sex though. Ronan is a bit weak, reminds me of Keating who is a bit wet and apparently not very nice in real life.

Lightofday · 19/02/2019 14:17

rivertam if she has another boy she van call it Gondor.

...Get my jacket while you're over there.

IamPickleRick · 19/02/2019 14:17

Rohan is the name of a boy I lost a drawing competition to in 1987. Don’t like it.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 19/02/2019 20:17

Rowan

FishCanFly · 20/02/2019 15:09

Ronan
