A sibling for Orla

We live in Scotland, DH is Irish and we would ideally like another Irish name (or at least Scottish/Gaelic/Celtic) for DC #2. Preferably something fairly recognisable in Scotland that we won’t have to correct too often!

Our surname is a bit sing songy - ends in ey with an L in the middle. Something like Eilidh would sound very silly.

Top of the boys list last time was Ruairi and we both still love it. I do worry that we gave DD an easy to spell and pronounce name and that it would be unfair to use a less simple name for a DS.

The only other boys name we both like is Torin.

Definitely don’t like anything very Scottish like Hamish, Angus, Fergus, Mungo!

Names that are out because of other connections:
Oran
Cillian
Patrick
Sean
Seamus
Ronan

Other girls names we liked:
Aisling (but DD says Ash-a-ling which puts me off!)
Maeve
Niamh

Names out because of other connections:
Cara
Aoife
Mirren
Mairead

Any ideas? Or opinions on these names?

Love Maeve and Niamh. Also like Sian, Mhairi, Breagh and Elspeth
I love Ruairi but would spell it Ruaridh. My DS is Malachi which is Gaelic. Also like Cian, Callan, Struan and Alasdair

I’ve got a Ruairí, if you like it go for it! We’re in NW England, no particular spelling problems just yet, it’s only 6 letters. People just learn it.

How about Oisín for a boy or Caoimhe for a girl. Two of my favourite Irish names.

Sureyouwill · 17/02/2019 18:06

Róisín (translates to little Rose)
Sarah (not Irish or Gaelic) but is similar to Orla
Sinéad
Gráinne (was a pirate queen of Ireland)
Deirdre (ex Queen in Celtic mythology I think)
Dearbhla (pronounced Dervla)

Sureyouwill · 17/02/2019 18:09

Áine (pronounced Awnya)
Caitriona

Boys:

Donnacha (pronounced Donnaka)
Diarmuid
Fionn
Fiachra (pronounced Fiakra)
Oisín

Sureyouwill · 17/02/2019 18:11

Diarmuid is pronounced Jeermid
Fionn is pronounced Fyun
Oisín is pronounced Usheen

Róisín and Dearbhla are two I considered for dd.
Donnacha and Diarmuid are two I considered if she had been a boy.

TheVanguardSix · 17/02/2019 18:18

I’m a Deirdre Grin

Dear-druh is how it’s said.

Naoise (Nee-shuh) is such a gorgeous name. He was Deirdre’s lover. But the spelling vs. pronunciation is a killer.
