Cordelia

What do you think?

It is DP's favourite name, and I'm coming around. It's a bit 'out there' for my usual tastes, but I guess it isn't too out there, is it? it reminds us of buffy too

I absolutely love the name Cora too, and would possibly use it as a nickname but not all the time (if I intended to and DP liked it too, I would just use it as I know it is a name). Do you think Cora could work as a casual nickname for Cordelia?

Love it, makes me think of Anne of Green Gables.

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2019 00:06

I love Cordelia & Cora isn't too much of a stretch as a diminutive. I think you should go for it.

ncforbabynames · 06/02/2019 00:23

Thank you! I've never seen Anne of green gables (it's my mum's favourite)!
I don't think it's too much of a stretch either, I think "Cory" is a natural shortening, but I don't have a tendency to shorten to an -ee sound (I don't know why) so I thought maybe Cora.

Lovely name

Enko · 06/02/2019 00:36

Pretty

Jitters22 · 06/02/2019 00:43

I think it's a fab name. Haven't seen it for years but there used to be a very attractive actress years ago called Cordelia something or other.

Think she was a mate of Joan Collins.

Goes off to google ..... Grin

moredoll · 06/02/2019 00:43

Cordelia is lovely. Prefer Cory, or Coral, as a shortening.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/02/2019 01:02

It makes me think of The Happiest Millionaire. It was shortened to Cordy in that.

ncforbabynames · 06/02/2019 01:48

I am so happy to hear some good feedback! When I've mentioned it (only in passing) to friends they seem to think it's an odd choice.

I like it. I lit would probably naturally shorten to Cordy, if at all.

Cora is a different name imo.

CountFosco · 06/02/2019 06:37

Love it. I wouldn't shorten it but would think the natural shortenings are either Cor(y) or Delia.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 06/02/2019 06:42

I have started reading Cats Eye by Margaret Atwood and Cordelia seems to be one of the bullies so this puts me off the name.

Outline below

Cordelia
ReaganSomerset · 06/02/2019 06:49

Was on our shortlist. We'd have used Dee Dee Dee everyday so we could shout "No, Dee Dee, no!" in the voice of Dexter from Dexter's lab

ReaganSomerset · 06/02/2019 06:50

Dee Dee, not Dee Dee Dee!

Gunpowder · 06/02/2019 06:52

Love it!

BlytheofWindyWillows · 06/02/2019 06:53

Love it but, obviously, I'm an Anne fan! Grin

CruiseSpeed · 06/02/2019 06:53

I'm not massively keen. Partly because I immediately connect it with Shakespeare and Cordelia in King Lear is an insufferable, sanctimonious little prig. Partly because the nicknames are ugly. Cord? Cordy? Delia?

Veterinari · 06/02/2019 06:57

Lovely classic unusual name

Buttercupsandaisies · 06/02/2019 06:58

Cordelia was a main character in Buffy - I can’t get past that at all!

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 06/02/2019 06:58

I LOVE it and would have lobbied hard for it if we'd had a girl. It reminds me of Shakespeare and Anne of Green Gables. Cora could work as a shortening although it wouldn't necessarily be shortened unless you wanted it to be - there is a Cordelia in DS1's nursery and she is called by the full version.

DH thought it was a bit frilly and also thought people would assume we'd only called her Cordelia after the Buffy character.

strawberrypenguin · 06/02/2019 07:00

I love it!
Buffy connection for me Smile

ncforbabynames · 06/02/2019 07:17

My mind goes straight to Buffy too... clearly not cultured enough for the Atwood/Shakespeare reference BlushGrin

I would intend to use Cordelia most of the time, as would DP, but I know myself and I will shorten it to Cora (I am terrible for giving people nicknames without realising it). My sister's name is Francesca; I've called her Franca for a long time (everyone else calls her Francesca or Cesca) - so Cora works with my natural nicknaming style, if that's even a thing.

King Lear for me too... it’s such a sad story “my poor fool is hanged” - I don’t think I could and it would jump into my mind meeting someone with that name... but better than Ophelia I suppose!

MumUnderTheMoon · 06/02/2019 10:29

Cora would work but I'm a big buddy the vampire slayer fan so any Cordelia would always be Cordy to me.
