Hugo or Barnaby?

Struggling to finalise the name for our new baby boy and wondered if you could help us please? We love Barnaby and Hugo and would be so helpful to get some feedback on these.. Do you know of any other babies with these names? Any nicknames (bad or good) associated with them? Any other thoughts? Are they common where you live?

We want something unusual but still historic/traditional/English... DH and I have very common names and so would like a name that is unlikely to be replicated in his Class of possible.

Would love to hear your comments. Thanks so much! 😊

Hugo

Hugo. Can't imagine a 40 year old man called Barnaby.

Lydia55y · 04/02/2019 06:28

Barnaby if you want a name that won’t be replicated. Hugo has had a huge popularity surge in the last 18months or so!

Barnaby is nice, Barney for a baby up to teens but then the full name for when he’s an adult.
Hugo could get shortened to Hew.

Barnaby sounds very English/traditional to me. Unusual whilst still being a proper name.

Barnaby. Hugo is popular and also sounds pretentious unless you are upper class (I dislike both the British obsession with class and the designation of some names to be upper class, but Hugo is one of the few names that I just can get over this with).

One of my teenage has Barnaby as a middle name. I still love it and people comment on it as it is still fairly unusual.

AdoreTheBeach · 04/02/2019 06:35

I think I love barnaby. Very unusual and lovely sound to it. Conjures up images of a strong manly man but with nice eyes, wavy dark hair.

Megan2018 · 04/02/2019 06:36

I know 3 of each born in the last 18 months, both nice names, but definitely popular here!
Of the 2 I slightly prefer Hugo.

Barnaby - I love it

Boredboredboredboredbored · 04/02/2019 06:38

Hugo. Barnaby is not a name for a grown man.

LoisLittsLover · 04/02/2019 06:41

Barnaby in our family gets called barn which is a bit meh imo

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 04/02/2019 07:09

Hugo. I know 3 Barnabys under he age of 5. It's a terrible mouthful too.

Sophronia · 04/02/2019 09:05

Hugo. I prefer Barnabas to Barnaby.

Catscratchclub · 04/02/2019 09:06

My greatest regret is that I didn’t have the courage to call DS Barnaby! I love love love it! Also, lots of Hugo’s at Ds school so it’s a bit run of the mill here.

VenusClapTrap · 04/02/2019 12:09

Love Hugo, loathe Barnaby. Both names feature at my dc’s Primary, but not loads of them.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 04/02/2019 12:28

I have a Barnaby and we get lots of lovely positive comments on his name. Only know one other.

I like Hugo less but probably only because the only Hugo I've ever met I really life was a pompous ass!

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 04/02/2019 13:01

Hugo sounds dignified and intelligent. Barnaby reminds me of Midsomer Murders, which I love, but I can't escape the association. And, I do think Barnaby in MM was dignified and intelligent! Smile

Congratulations! Flowers

ChubsyMcChubFace · 04/02/2019 13:08

I really like both, but I’d go with Barnaby.

VoyageInTheDark · 04/02/2019 13:15

I really like Barnaby

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2019 13:20

I like both but I'd check how popular Hugo is. I know grown up Barneys and a teenage Barnaby. It's a lovely name.
I vote Barnaby.

MondeoFan · 04/02/2019 13:26

I like both but I work in a Pre School and in the past 2 years we've had 6 Hugo's and 1 Hugh there.

rebelrosie12 · 04/02/2019 13:30

Hugo. Definitely

OutPinked · 04/02/2019 17:18

Barnaby is much cuter and I love Barney but I think Hugo suits an adult better.

Shadow1234 · 04/02/2019 19:14

Hugo
