Initials GOP...

I won’t say the exact names in case we end up using them, but we are planning on using one of the Georgia/Georgina variants for our dd’s first name, and a family name starting with O for her middle name. Our surname starts with P.

I was just having a google of the initials to see if they stood for anything and found out that the GOP is another term for the US Republican Party! Apparently it stands for ‘Grand Old Party’.

Would this connection put you off? Does it matter for a British kid? Or am I overthinking it...

Overthinking it! I don't think many would twig.

RCohle · 31/01/2019 00:19

I think of GOP as being a pretty well known acronym. That said it doesn't stand for anything terrible (Trump notwithstanding) so it wouldn't totally put me off if I was devoted to the names.

Shadow1234 · 31/01/2019 00:32

I wouldnt have known that without looking it up, and no it wouldnt bother me at all.

Kescilly · 31/01/2019 00:38

I’m American and immediately thought of the Republican Party but still don’t see it as an issue. I’d only think it was weird if the person or their parents were huge Republicans and it seemed intentional. Otherwise it’s just one of those things that you notice for a second and then forget.

JumpOrBePushed · 31/01/2019 00:48

I’d not heard of that acronym before.

I don’t think it’s something to worry about for a British child.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2019 01:02

I'd make that association but it wouldn't matter.

However, you'd want to be sure she kept her surname if she married anyone with a surname beginning with B, D, O ...Grin

Littleloafofbread · 31/01/2019 03:03

Honestly, when I see GOP I shudder a bit, expecting to see something hideous about Donald Trump or Sarah Palin (bit old school I know). I don't think it would let me be put off choosing a name though, especially as the baby's initials won't be used frequently, and hopefully not in a context where they could be confused with a political party Grin

BarbaraMiceland · 31/01/2019 13:32

Hmmm.... wondering whether we should add a second middle name.

We could throw Olivia in and then her initials would be GOOP like Gwyneth Paltrow’s awful pseudo-science business!

I have a theory that names starting with a J are particularly common as middle names because they guard against accidental creation of words from initials.Grin

CloserIAm2Fine · 31/01/2019 20:33

It makes me think of Grant of Probate, which at work are referred to as GOPs. However I wouldn’t comment on it to someone who had those initials and it’s not offensive or anything

meditrina · 31/01/2019 20:37

By chance, I knew it's the grand old party, but I think that's not terribly well known in general in the UK

What I did think of was the slang term gopping, which isn't a great association, tbh

ZebraKid71 · 31/01/2019 20:50

It would be my first association.. Its not a massive issue though.. Unless you're quite political.

Sophronia · 31/01/2019 21:53

It was my first association.

Scandaloso · 31/01/2019 23:33

It's certainly my first association. But it's not that big a deal I suppose in that people aren't referred to by their initials all that often. And it's not as bad as BJ or STD which are definite no-nos. Having said that, knowing what a repulsive collection of misogynistic, racist scumbags the GOP is, I personally would add another name in there to break it up.

Cookit · 01/02/2019 07:10

It was my first association too and I’d expect a lot of people to make that association too.
Having said that, it’s not that bad and most would assume its unintentional and by the time your child is signing their initials Trump won’t be in power anymore and the party is (hopefully?) a bit less toxic than current leadership.
If it was me I’d consider it carefully but not role a nice name out because of it.

Mrscog · 01/02/2019 07:13

Never even heard of it - I though you were worried about the association with gopping! Which is why I’d avoid it because I hate the word gopping.

BikeRunSki · 01/02/2019 07:21

The out local slang “ Gop” is a derogatory and childish term that means “vomit”, as in “Uuuurgh that’s goping”.

MikeUniformMike · 01/02/2019 12:47

Made me think of Cole Porter's You're the top.
