Due ds 2 in 3 months and we are undecided on a name, these are dp and I favourites. Opinions?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/01/2019 19:08

No. Just no. What about John or James or, you know, something normal...

4point2fleet · 27/01/2019 19:13

Aidan is best.

However, if your DP wants Conlin I think you should persuade him to spell it Conlan as people won't think that is a misspelling of Colin.

HappyGoLuckyGo · 27/01/2019 19:20

Wow, people are being quite negative about your names, OP!

I do prefer Aiden to Ayden, but Ayden is- I think- preferable to Conlin. Which my phone autocorrects to Conklin?? I find the N-L combo quite hard to pronounce. So, out of the two, I pick Ayden.

PrincessPeachy1 · 27/01/2019 19:50

Yes I certainly wasn’t expecting this level of negativity, safe to say I won’t be using either name. Never mind plenty more out there

Sorry meant Aidan, not Aiden!

HildegardVonBlingen · 27/01/2019 20:21

Was going to say that I have never heard of either name, OP. But as you are fortunately not going to use either, I won't! There are a gazillion lovely, real, names that you can choose.

Mayhemmumma · 27/01/2019 20:28

Aidan/Ayden is the best name

4littlewhirlwinds · 27/01/2019 22:02

the negativity shouldn’t put you off the name at all, anyone who isn’t using common names on here is considered weird. i LOVE both names and know a young Conlan, who has a brother called Lochlan both of with i think are good names. Ayden is fab too and the Y instead of the I would give him a sense of individuality.

Pomegranatemolasses · 27/01/2019 22:07

Conlon a really common Irish surname. Never heard of it as a first name. Aidan best spelling for this name.

SmallAndFarAway · 27/01/2019 22:08

'the Y instead of the I would give him a sense of individuality'

Take it from me, it gets old really fast having to spell out your name in every single interaction. In fairness, my parents could not have foreseen that I would have moved continents - please don't saddle your kids with youneek spelling for the sake of individuality they can dye their hair blue as teenagers like everybody else

Juicer54321 · 27/01/2019 22:15

I’d spell it aiden. Or I know a lovely little Hayden. How about that?

4littlewhirlwinds · 27/01/2019 22:16

i’ve had to spell my name specifically my entire life and honestly i don’t think it’s a bad thing at all, it takes 2 seconds to correct someone😂 i stand by what i said about individuality, and by the way it’s spelt ‘unique’.

HildegardVonBlingen · 27/01/2019 22:37

Hayden. It gets worse. OP, just choose a normal name. There are lots of uncommon ones, if uniqueness is an issue. But they are at least real names.

rededucator · 27/01/2019 22:48

Ayden is an American bastardized version on a lovely traditional Irish name.

TatianaLarina · 27/01/2019 23:18

What about Conall?

Astronica · 28/01/2019 08:34

Aidan is best, but stick to this spelling.

PrincessPeachy1 · 28/01/2019 08:48

Thank you for all the brutally honest opinions, showed this to my dp and we have decided it is back to the drawing board Smile

But 4whirlwinds - people have said why not Conlan instead of Colin Conlin, as that’s a better spelling but similar sounding name. Similarly if the kid you know was called Locklin people might be suggesting that Lochlan (or Lachlan) was a better spelling for the same sounding name.

It’s not so much the names that people are objecting to (as indeed we’ve been asked to do by posting the question), it’s the spellings which don’t look how one would expect those names to look, and therefore have he potential to piss off the future name owner.

I have one of those names which can be spelled 2/3 ways and it’s annoying enough having to say “Claire with an E” for example, but if I had to say “Klare with a K and no i and an e on the end... K. L. A. R. E” that would get old real quick.

4point2fleet · 28/01/2019 18:17

Hmm.. I kinda like Klare Grin

jigsawpiece · 28/01/2019 23:19

Aidan is fine. Conlin, as others have said, looks like a spelling mistake (to my eyes anyway) and also would be shortened to "Con" - not ideal

SweetbutAPsycho · 28/01/2019 23:32

Thought I'd suggest some similar names;
Arden
Ethan
Hayden
Austin
Connor
Caelin
Caiden
Declan

Lumene · 29/01/2019 00:05

Agree with PP on Ayden. Looks spelt wrong to me. Conlin better of the two.

TigerQuoll · 29/01/2019 05:53

Someone suggested Conall which your DP might like, also consider Ciaran

Maxrichterttt · 29/01/2019 06:12

I think Conlan looks and sounds nicer than Conlin.

Maxrichterttt · 29/01/2019 06:20

Baby name board can be unnecessarily harsh OP! There’s always comments from ignorant people about choosing “normal” names (“like John I’d James” 🙄)
If you’re looking for Irish/Celtic names how about
Finnan
Fionn
Connor
Oran
Donal
Though I like Conlan- reckon you should go for that if you like it!
