Adelaide or Lydia?

Sunneye · 26/01/2019 14:56

We’ve been back and forth so many times and cannot decide - we’ll probably have to toss a coin soon!

Does anyone have any strong opinions either way?

We already have a Harriet.

Surname is three syllables, begins with B. Middle name will probably be Florence.

Lydia, definitely.

cananybodyfindmesomeonetolove · 27/01/2019 00:28

or Adelynne?

goldengummybear · 27/01/2019 00:42

I think Adelaide leads to the question "Were you conceived in Adelaide?"
Not a fan of Lydia (as I watch the Handsmaid Tale) but it's much better than Adelynne (is that a name?) or Adelaide (I don't like place names anyway)

ValiaH · 27/01/2019 00:44

Adelaide- with the potential nickname Heidi as per the book!

chipsnmayo · 27/01/2019 00:48

swimming does it really matter if parents use names that they are not connected too? (I believe that's where your going with) I believe Sydney is quite a popular name in the US, and when I lived in NZ 15 odd years ago DD had a friend (girl) called Devon, said parents had never set foot in the UK!

I love Adelaide, but my best friend is from Adelaide (the city in Australia) Grin And Addy is a lovely nickname.

I am not keen on Lydia.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 27/01/2019 00:59

No, wasnt coming from a connected place - I dont particularly like place names! If the person was conceived there its kind of worse!! Im well aware theyre popular and lots of people therefore do, and would never say that irl though! Just my preference.

However, in my head calling someone london or paris or Adelaide doesnt really "go" with Harriet which I think of as more traditional/classical name. Different type of name altogether. There isnt a rule that says your names have to "go" though.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 27/01/2019 01:00

...it was more that, its kind of weird when you live somewhere to have other people think of it as a name. You almost need not to have a connection/any likelihood of living there or the locals will find it amusing.

chipsnmayo · 27/01/2019 01:04

I really don't think locals find it amusing, they will probably be happy that someone likes the name of their town!. I think we will agree to disagree Grin

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 27/01/2019 01:27

I guess so! We live near a popular place-name and many of us find it funny when people call a child that, which possibly shapes my view!

Astronica · 27/01/2019 01:59

I prefer the beautiful Adelaide, but both names are smart and stylish, and not over-used. I also am not that keen on Addy (but don't hate it), but there are lots of other options if you want a nickname - though you don't need one, (eg Dede, Daisy, Ada, Aidy, Andy or even Edie or Lulu), and I have known of an Adelaide who only ever gets called by her full name.

I think both would sound good as Harriet's sister, and both would sound great with Florence in the middle, so that doesn't differentiate between Adelaide and Lydia for me. Just personal preference for Adelaide but there's nothing wrong with Lydia.

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 27/01/2019 06:36

I love Lydia - have worked with two and they were both great - and think it goes beautifully with Harriet, and with Florence as a middle name. I don't mind Adelaide but Lydia is definitely my favourite.

17caterpillars1mouse · 27/01/2019 06:42

Oh i love both too. Tough decision OP.

I think i'd gp with Adelaide but if asked a different time could quite easily be Lydia

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/01/2019 06:59

Adelaide is a name like Sydney or Devon or Skye or any other place name. would be weird if they ever wanted to go to Australia. (Im still waiting for aomeone to come over with names such as southampton or Edinburgh or Sussex!!)

Rubbish! You wouldn’t say the same about Victoria or Florence would you?? What about Siena? Adelaide was a name before it was a place.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 27/01/2019 11:04

Maybe I just have bad associations with the place! Id find it weird, but wouldn't say so irl. Name forum is asking for peoples reactions is it not?

MikeUniformMike · 27/01/2019 14:01

I don't like Adelaide at all. Lydia is nice but it rhymes with and nn will be Binlid.

Needingwine · 27/01/2019 17:40

Lydia is a classic and beautiful name and would get my vote. It goes really well with Harriet. Lovely names x

CloserIAm2Fine · 27/01/2019 19:02

I like both but I prefer Adelaide, and i like Addy as a shortening

TokenGinger · 27/01/2019 22:36

I love Adelaide. That was my girl's name before we found out baby is a boy.

Normandy144 · 27/01/2019 22:47

Love, love, love Lydia. DH was adamantly against it though so we have a Claudia instead (which i also love!)

Kokeshi123 · 27/01/2019 23:27

Both nice, but Adelaide has the edge.

starkid · 28/01/2019 15:02

I like both, but like Adelaide slightly more Smile congratulations!

DiddyLongLegs · 28/01/2019 15:12

Lydia definitely that's beautiful. As an aside, Devon is a great name too, I'd never heard it used as a name before this thread, and now it's definitely on my list!

HappyGoLuckyGo · 29/01/2019 11:14

Definitely Lydia.
Harriet and Lydia.
Harriet and Adelaide... No, Lydia is much more beautiful, classic and classy...

midsomermurderess · 29/01/2019 11:31

A vote for Adelaide here.

Jennifer124 · 29/01/2019 11:37
