Unisex Names

I am expecting a baby girl in six weeks. We are still deciding on the name but a new contender is Rory / Rori.

Only issue is we live in Scotland and this a very common name for boys. However I love it and it’s acrually a nice mixture of both mine and my oh’s name tooSmile

We were thinking Rori would maybe work better than Rory as looks more feminine. We both like the name but obviously have that doubt in the back of our minds what others will think of it as it’s our daughter who will have to go through life with the name.

I know this is a nickname for aurora but I’m not too keen on that, and don’t want to give her an official name we aren’t sure of just so we can use a nickname we like.

So.. dragged my point out, but what would you think if a friend or family member called their little girl this? And opinions on spellings? D9 you think this name would Be mocked or thought of as hideous?

I know a little girl called Andi. Not my kind of name but it suits her. I think Rori/Rory works for a girl. Does it matter if written down someone may assume she’s a boy? They’ll soon realise their error once they see a little girl.

Rory is a lovely name for boys or girls. Bobby Kennedy named one of his daughters this.

grenadezombie · 25/01/2019 09:26

Another one who thinks that in Scotland it would be Ruari, not Rory, which is English

There are lots of Rorys too.

UnDeadPool · 25/01/2019 09:30

Not to my taste, no. It’s not unisex at all.

I went to school with a Kerry Girl and a Kerry Boy too, although that is a proper unisex name.

What about Tori? Short for Victoria.

FartnissEverbeans · 25/01/2019 09:35

There are loads of Rorys in Scotland and Ruari isn’t the correct spelling anyway

EnteratA · 25/01/2019 09:39

Why not register her as Aurora but have her known as Rori. Like Prince Henry/Harry.

daisypond · 25/01/2019 10:46

Rory/Rori isn't good for a girl, unless a nickname for something. I don't like Aurora either. There must be something else you can find.

MikeUniformMike · 25/01/2019 11:00

It's a boy's name. It's not a unisex name.
Andrea, Daniele, Michele and Nicola are boys' names in Italy, but it if you saw the names in the UK you'd think they were girls' names.
It will only cause problems, so avoid.

Belmo · 25/01/2019 11:48

I’m in Scotland. Just being honest- yes I think it is hideous and I would (in private, obviously) totally judge you. Rory is a lovely (very common around here) boy’s name).

daisypond · 25/01/2019 12:04

How about Romy? Or something like Rose Rita to get Rori?

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 12:34

Totally naff.

Especially so in Scotland where there are many, many, many, male Rorys (and Ruaridhs).

Not a fan of this trend for giving boys names to girls. It's never proposed in reverse (a son called Catriona anyone?) so 'unisex' is a bit of a misnomer.

Lantern92 · 25/01/2019 22:43

I love it OP but I love boyish names on girls ! If I have a girl she will be Blake ! I think Rory is lovely and if you love it then go for it.

BeekyChitch · 25/01/2019 22:46

I like it! Sounds cute! There will always be some who absolutely hate boy names on girls and some who don't mind!

My cousin has a little girl called Finlay (also Scottish) and she totally suits it!

MrsTerryPratcett · 25/01/2019 23:11

I used to like boys names on girls until I realized that boys very rarely get girls names. And it was pointed out that that's because it's a promotion for girls and a demotion for boys. I can't unknow that.

jackstini · 25/01/2019 23:22

I really like it (& have Scottish heritage although live in England now)

Winnie2019 · 26/01/2019 09:27

To me it's a very masculine boys name and I personally really dislike it when people call children by a name that is traditionally used for the opposite sex.

THIS.

Don't do it OP. It's vile.

“I personally really dislike it when people call children by a name that is traditionally used for the opposite sex.”
I probably wouldn’t mind so much if it was actually “children” rather than “girls”......

Divgirl2 · 26/01/2019 13:24

Sorry but it's a boy's name, and quite a masculine one - I think it means red haired king!

Twelve8Ts · 28/01/2019 15:06

I thought it was becoming more common because it’s a shortening of Aurora, I’ve seen people suggest it on here a few times when asking for boys names for their girls.
