Thoughts on Rouge

An acquaintance just named their child this.

I have no idea if it's Rouge as in untrustworthy or Rouge as in cafe.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Happilyacceptingcookies · 22/01/2019 20:16

Don't like it. Sounds naughty for some reason.

hippipotamiwantstoloseapound · 22/01/2019 20:16

The untrustworthy version would be Rogue?

CarolDanvers · 22/01/2019 20:17

I actually knew a little girl called Rogue. Ridiculous.

Ncforthiis1 · 22/01/2019 20:17

I can't spell! It's Rogue as in untrustworthy for sure.

Wow.

Also a brand of fitness equipment...

tammytoby · 22/01/2019 20:19

It's not uncommon in France.

LotsToThinkOf · 22/01/2019 20:24

Awful

Shadow1234 · 22/01/2019 20:24

If my french serves me right, it means red.

Sexnotgender · 22/01/2019 20:26

Rouge is red in french (I think)
Rogue is untrustworthy etc.

Depends on spelling.

Rouge is not great but not horrendous. Rogue is dreadful.

Ncforthiis1 · 22/01/2019 20:28

It's Rogue as in untrustworthy.

What a terrible name.

Apologies for my earlier mispelling.

I’ve always liked the name Rogue. But I grew up watching the xmen cartoons and Rogue was the coolest.

Moondancer73 · 22/01/2019 20:54

Actually I love Rogue, really not keen on Rouge. Rogue says daring, adventurous and a bit of a wild child

SweetbutAPsycho · 22/01/2019 21:08

My dog is named Rogue lol it's a character from X-Men. I definitely would not name a child Rogue or Rouge for that matter

Villainess · 22/01/2019 21:09

Rogue is in the X Men. Of all the geek subsets sci fi geeks are most likely to name their kid after a character from their favourite franchise.

LOTR geeks are also very prone to this behaviour.

TheCraicDealer · 22/01/2019 21:13

Unless the baby is going to grow up to be the love interest in a regency romance novel I would stay clear.

lottiegarbanzo · 22/01/2019 21:16

There were lots of rogues in Enid Blyton books. Mostly foreign. I read it before hearing it, so thought it was pronounced 'ro-gue' (like you with a g).

Should've called him Roger.

goldengummybear · 22/01/2019 21:19

I remember someone here asking for opinions on the name Rogue. Funny if that was your friend.

jellymaker · 22/01/2019 21:20

It's not as bad as Rage who we came across at a children's party. The entertainer when seeking to qualify what he heard said " as in road rage". Yes as in road rage

Ncforthiis1 · 22/01/2019 21:29

Definitely not an xmen geek thing!

Hilarious if it is my acquaintance who was asking! Oh gosh.

Moondancer73 · 22/01/2019 22:33

I've come across a Rowdy previously too, a good few years ago now as well as his brother who was named Striker - I kid you not.

ninalovesdragons · 23/01/2019 02:18

I think Rogue is french for snape in the HP books. Not keen

OwlBeThere · 23/01/2019 02:43

I like Rogue. Huge X men fan. Each to their own. I think the mumsnet favourites like Maud and Edith snd Mabel are awful.

ReflectentMonatomism · 23/01/2019 02:58

I worked with someone who named their daughter what I heard as Gynon, although I later found out is spelt Guinan. That’s an interesting name, I said, where does it come from?

Apparently, she is a character from some Star Trek franchise.

Foolishly, I asked why they had chosen it.

Well, he said, my wife and I really admire Whoopi Goldberg, who plays said character.

Digging the pit deeper and darker, I asked “so why not call your daughter Whoopi?”

...

...

...

“Because she’d be mocked for having a silly name”.

Hmm

So Guinan it is. Perhaps when she’s small, she could be called MicroGuinan.

RCohle · 23/01/2019 03:18

I quite like it!

I don't the connotations of it are quite as bad as "untrustworthy". Think of "you old rogue!" or Sarah Palin's autobiography "going rogue". I think it often implies more a dashing maverick vibe.

ReflectentMonatomism · 23/01/2019 03:19

Sarah Palin is not a “dashing maverick”. She is a racist idiot.
