Non top 20 boys

Hi all

Baby is imminent and I am stressed as we still haven't settled on a boys name that feels right.

We like Oscar and Theodore (Ted) but based on here and ONS they feel so 'trendy' and popular now which puts me off slightly. Both DH and I have popular names for our generation, always one of a few in class at school etc.

Girl wise we would go for Theodora (Thea or Dottie for short) which we are super happy with. I like it's vintage vibe but with a cool shortening that isn't super common.

Boys I just find so much harder - I am not sure why it matters but picking one in he top 20 just puts me off! Any suggestions very welcome... thanks in advance Smile

I prefer Dorothea to Theodora. Dot(tie) is lovely.
Boy name - I would go for Philip (Pip/Phil), Michael, and similar sorts of name, or if you wand Ted how about Edward, Edmund or Edgar?

Some great options, thanks all! A few of my close friends have nabbed a couple do these but now have a good shortlist to work with!

I have a Daniel and an Elliot. Very outing here! Both relatively normal but not massively popular either.

I have a Theodore. We call him Theo or Theodore. We are yet to meet any others so far. He’s 13 months old. I only know one other Theo who is 5. My older son (11) has no class mates called Theo/Theodore and I haven’t noticed any on the school newsletter. We know a Teddy who is 5. Last time I checked it’s quite far down in the top 50 isn’t it?

Heymummee · 22/01/2019 19:47

According to the list I’ve just seen Theo was number 19 last year, whereas Theodore was number 70

My DS is 5 months old and I know 3 Theo's born around when he was. Any ie ending names seem super popular too like Archie, Alfie.

LlamaShark · 22/01/2019 20:01

I have a Theodora, her brother is Rex.

Teddies and Theos all around me. I know three Teddies and they're all Edwards on the birth cert. I also know three Theos, not sure of they're officially Theo or Theodore.

Love the name Theo but it is popular. Do you like Leo?

Cbeebiesrehab · 22/01/2019 22:12

We considered both of these names for our DD but decided against them by the time we had our DS. Theodore is probably one of the most popular boys names in these parts. I’ve only met two Oscars and I do love it however, like you, worry it’s a little too popular. We went with Jude instead. Other names we considered were:
Seth
Eli/Elias/Elijah
Joss
Dexter
Fred

ThanksItHasPockets · 23/01/2019 12:13

Theodore is number 38.
Theo is number 21.

If you combine them, there were about 4300 Theo / Theodores born last year, which would put them higher than Jack (#5, 4150). That’s why they feel more popular than the figures for either name would suggest.

tammytoby · 23/01/2019 12:53

Wow, that's a lot of Theodore/Theo's!Shock

And that's only in one year..!

Villainess · 23/01/2019 13:56

Isn't it funny how a name just comes out of nowhere and really takes off. Theos and Theodores were a pretty rare breed for such a long time and suddenly they're all over the place! I wonder how it is that a name spreads like that. Are there any celebs called Theo?

tammytoby · 23/01/2019 13:58

I think there was a famous footballer a few years ago. Maybe people copied him?

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2019 14:03

Was it a popular name before the footballer started playing in the premier league?

blondeirishmummy84 · 23/01/2019 14:07

Our son is called Maverick and we love it, as does pretty much everyone who have asked!

Pregnant with another, dont know gender but if another boy we like Sonny.

binkybea · 23/01/2019 14:10

I think the names are quite regional tbh for example Jack was very popular when my son was born so we did not call him this. Ironically there is only one at his school Wink
