What do your children wish they were called?

And I don't mean 'Peppa' or 'flobadobadee'

I mean children old enough to understand names, do they love their names or wish you had called them something different?
I am interested in this because we often want to choose unusual names for our DC but do they like them? My DC is still too young to know.
I have quite a serious but common name in the 80's and I really wanted to be a Sophie or an Isabella, something more girly and soft.
I find it hard choosing a name because I want to choose something I like but also know how important it is when you are school age to feel like you 'fit in'.
For example, I think Greta is a great name, but would a Greta like her name in a sea of Isla's, Evie's etc.

I always wanted to be a Katie. My name is very American and very 90s! It was the top name in America for several years.
My DD’s name is very unusual (not in any baby books) but doesn’t sound out there and I hope she’ll always love it like I do but if not her middle names are both very popular so if she wants to go by one of them instead I won’t mind.

Moonflower12 · 21/01/2019 18:17

My eldest 2 DDs complain that their names are too boring. Think very classic. They wish I'd gone for the more exciting/exotic versions.
My son likes his name as it has many variants that he can use.
My 6 year old girl has a bit of a different name- it's within the Royal family but not a classic. She likes hers.

Moonflower12 · 21/01/2019 18:18

The DDs and DS are adults.

My dc seem happy with their name. Except ds 10 wanted to be Seamus not a shortened version!!

Choosinganame · 21/01/2019 18:24

Moonflower - does your dd's name begin with B any chance? If so that's one of the names I really like, or a variant of it.
I think it's quite hard to find a name that a child will like all through their life.

Just asked both mine (10 and 12) love their names . We avoided tedium of top 10 yet not way out.

junebirthdaygirl · 21/01/2019 18:30

My dd is a tiny bit disappointed that her name became extremely popular since she was younger. She wishes l had given her her second name which was added on as its a family name and very oldfashioned. She likes it as there are none around. But she's not changing or anything.
My ds wishes l had given him a short snappy name as everyone shortens his quite long nàme in various ways which is annoying.
My third is happy. Fairly short, not common name. Got it right third time!!

WeCameToDance · 21/01/2019 18:32

Its weird but I think quite often what we would name ourselves isnt always names that we love. If I suddenly didnt have a name I would name myself Alex, Harrie or Ellie. I dont know why, dont particularly like those names and wouldnt give them to my children but thats what I see when I look in the mirror.
Simillarly some of my most loved names I wouldnt give to my children. For example, I love both Atticus and Harbor. My son is not named either of these even though I love them. I worried he wouldnt feel the same way and then he would spend his life feeling embarrassed of his name.
Basically I think its impossible to get right. I have never met anyone who loves there name. I think giving them a name that you love while not being too out of the ordinary (and theres a wide scope for this) is key. That way even if they dont like it at least its not because its bizarre.

tammytoby · 21/01/2019 18:59

I think many kids would prefer not to have to add a surname initial to their names

Nnnnnineteen · 21/01/2019 19:00

Mine likes her name and wouldn't change it. She is aware it became v popular over the last 7-8 years, but as we still don't know anyone with the name, it hasn't impacted on her yet, though this may change at some point.

Jaz32 · 21/01/2019 19:47

Just asked my boys. The 10yo quite likes his name doesn’t know what else he’d rather be called anyway. The 7yo just said he doesn’t like his name and would rather be James which is my oldest son’s & Husband’s middle name! He’s never said anything before!
My daughter is only 14 months but I actually doubt her name all the time and wish I’d called her something else but then didn’t want to change it incase she wished I kept her original name when she’s older lol...

spiderlight · 21/01/2019 19:55

Mine has a relatively unusual Welsh name and is desperate to be called Tom instead, because of the Tom Gates books.

Yabbers · 21/01/2019 19:56

DD wants something more exciting, apparently. He name isn’t particularly common either and she’s always complaining those racks of tat with names on never has hers.

MissMoodyMoo · 21/01/2019 20:47

Not my child. But during my party girl days my alter ego was named Penelope "penny" when trying to be cute 😂😂 if I was on a night out getting male attention it's always the name id tell them! I was also veterinary student in these stories lol 🙄😂😂 anyway I wouldn't say my name's very common it's a type of Crystal/gem stone and I actually quite like it! But I always gravitated towards Penelope

Lollyice · 21/01/2019 20:51

Dd is 7 and has been calling herself Alizabeth for at least 3 years when she is playing role play type games. All her dolls are Alizabeth and she tells her school friends it's her middle name. Definitely starts with an A, not an E.

Icedgemandjelly · 21/01/2019 20:53

Dragoneye

Mrsfrumble · 21/01/2019 20:55

DD, 6, announced the other day that she wishes we’d called her Tallulah.

I actually quite like it, but never would have used it. Sorry DD!

WarmthAndDepth · 21/01/2019 20:56

Cheyney and Ariana.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 21/01/2019 20:57

My dd is 11, in her games when she was younger she called herself Emma.

If you ask her, she thinks Annabelle, and Michelle are beautiful, soft, faminine nanes!

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/01/2019 21:00

DS(12) loves his own name. It's quite unusual and very old. He was very excited when he discovered 3 others on FB.Confused

weegiemum · 21/01/2019 21:11

My older 2 (dd1and ds) quite like their names. Dd2 has a timeless classic and would rather be known by her middle name, Jessie!

weegiemum · 21/01/2019 21:13

I've got a very 60s/early 70s name and as a child was desperate to be called Elizabeth. There was a girl in my class called Elizabeth Cameron and I ached to have her name. Now I'm quite happy with my name.

Musmerian · 21/01/2019 21:17

DD 23 is called Hester, DS 18 Edmund and DS15 Freddy. They all like their names and so do I. But sad Freddy has become so popular.

Choosinganame · 21/01/2019 21:23

It seems like there's no predicting it!
My name was really popular the decade. before I was born. It came out of nowhere and then faded fast so the only people with my name are usually my age or a decade older.
I love the name Keira but I'm worried it's similar to mine, peaked 10 years ago and now falling fast out of fashion.
