Initials BJ

I've read other threads recently about initials, but still really torn about this.

I'm going to have a little boy in the next few months. My three year old is called Callum. His name fit my criteria of being: easy to pronounce and spell; not so common that he'd be one of six in the same class, not so unusual that people would laugh at him, only nickname I could think of is Cal which I think is pretty cool. Plus I just love the sound of Callum. So I'm looking for something that fits the same criteria for this baby. We love Benjamin. Benji for a baby, Ben when he gets older. But my surname starts with J so his initials would be BJ. Does it matter?

I remember when jade goody called her son bobby-jack there was a huge fuss in the media about his initials being BJ

Notquiteagandt · 20/01/2019 14:18

And although I am embaressed to remember that. So telling that 10yrs or how ever long later I remember it

Peakypolly · 20/01/2019 14:23

Really not a problem in my life. Two members of my family have the initials BJ , one male, one female, neither has experienced any teasing etc.

LittleTipple · 20/01/2019 14:25

I personally wouldn't. How about Sebastian as an alternative - Seb for short?

potatoscone · 20/01/2019 14:34

Benji is a dogs name.

RussellSprout · 20/01/2019 14:38

I knew a girl at school called Becky Jennings who actually requested people call her 'BJ'. I don't think she realised what it meant....

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/01/2019 14:40

Don’t do it!

My first name and surname initials plus a number are my log in for all my work systems.

holidayarmadillo2019 · 20/01/2019 14:43

We have last name J and liked the name Brody but decided against it because of the initials.

I'm glad I did, not only because of the initials but I don't really like that name now and would have regretted using it.

holidayarmadillo2019 · 20/01/2019 14:45

Imagine teachers writing B.J. On the back of their art work at school

cloudtree · 20/01/2019 14:47

I know someone is who still called BJ by everyone as an adult (he has the initials B and J). He has taken it and owns it but its tough for a child.

emilybrontescorsett · 20/01/2019 14:49

No don't do it.
Sports tops, initials on the board , on teachers lists, then initials at work. We use initials at work.
Choose something else.

seven201 · 20/01/2019 15:02

Don't do it

Badbadbunny · 20/01/2019 15:07

Don't even think about it. Bullying & name-calling is bad enough without providing them with ammunition.

Cookit · 20/01/2019 15:28

I wouldn’t do it.

ilovepixie · 20/01/2019 16:02

I use just my initials all the time when signing things at work.

AutumnColours9 · 20/01/2019 16:05

I really wouldn't risk that. Don't do it.

Torsz · 20/01/2019 16:12

Definitely not ok - regardless of middle name. He would've been teased so much at my school!

raviolidreaming · 20/01/2019 16:42

It's great how many people haven't had an issue with it, but I don't expect that's much consolation for those who have. Don't do it!

MumUnderTheMoon · 20/01/2019 19:02

Yes it matters unfortunately it's likely to get him tortured at school, just the way of the world I'm afraid.

bridgetreilly · 21/01/2019 10:22

It would matter at secondary school. People won't know his middle name, they'll know his first and last names and that's the stage where they would find BJ hilarious. Plus as others have said, email addresses are often assigned as initials, which would not look great in a professional context.

OutPinked · 21/01/2019 10:59

My best friend’s BJ but that’s first and middle initials. It didn’t affect him. There was a boy in my year with those initials come to think of it and no one said anything. I don’t think it’s a big deal, there’ll be plenty of people in the world with those initials.

My first DS’s initials are JCB (two surnames). No one has said anything.

TatianaLarina · 21/01/2019 12:21

A schoolfriend of mine initials BJ was called Big Jugs as much as blow job.

Cookit · 21/01/2019 12:35

JCB is VERY different though, that wouldn’t bother me. There are too many short words or acronyms to avoid completely spelling something with initials. I would just avoid the ones that spell something particularly rude, like the OP’s question.

KatherinaMinola · 21/01/2019 12:38

Just a warning about the middle initial thing - schools and workplaces will often use just the first and last intitial, for example on minutes

Yup, I was going to say this.

Boris's name isn't even Boris, so he chose the BJ initials.

KatherinaMinola · 21/01/2019 12:39

Fun fact: JCB is actually called that because it was the initials of the person who invented it!
