Seren/Steren

Seren = Welsh
Steren = Cornish
Both mean star. Which do you prefer and why? Also would you use as a first name or do you think they would be best as a middle name?

I much prefer Seren

Nice for a first or middle name

Jiggins · 19/01/2019 17:01

Seren is nicer. Steren seems more......medical somehow. Maybe it reminds me of sterilise.

Not sure if it should be a first or middle name. Totally depends on what the other names would be.

goldengummybear · 19/01/2019 17:01

Seren is gorgeous. Steren makes me think of a medical product (maybe the Ster bit looking like the word Sterile?)

blueskiesandforests · 19/01/2019 17:02

I've only heard of Seren and mistakenly thought Steren was a misspelling, so I personally wouldn't use Steren! I don't like the sound of Steren as I read it, but perhaps it has an unexpected pronunciation?

Do you have Welsh or Cornish heritage though? Surely that's the deciding factor!

NuffingChora · 19/01/2019 17:04

Steren would also autocorrect to Steven constantly, which while a very 21st century problem, would be an almighty pain in the arse I imagine...

mummyofboys30 · 19/01/2019 17:05

blueskiesandforests I dont have either! I spose I prefer the beachy side of cornwall more than Wales! Not that you can choose a name on that basis.

I would only use Seren if it was going to be pronounced correctly...ie NOT Se-run as is so often heard. It is Se-ren with a definite second e after the r. Otherwise it is just hideous to hear

Kewcumber · 19/01/2019 17:08

Welsh origins here so would go for Seren, never heard of Steren.

I think most people won;t have heard of Steren. But yes agree with previous poster who said only if you know how to pronounce it

honorariam · 19/01/2019 17:18

DH is Welsh and family still live in 'god's own country' and we considered Seren for first DC but decided against it in case we ever move back to Wales... I would never dream of calling my child 'Star' which is basically what everyone would think if we were in Wales!

daisypond · 19/01/2019 17:25

I've not heard of Steren. It does look a bit medical to me - sterile, sternum, etc, but that's ignorance on my part. I've only heard of Seren on here. But both are fine for middle names. Seren seems quite popular on here. I like Serena more, but that's a different name completely.

daisypond · 19/01/2019 17:26

Stella means star as well. That's nice.

HollowTalk · 19/01/2019 17:27

Why wouldn't you go for Serena instead?

Thesearmsofmine · 19/01/2019 17:28

I would go for Seren(Welsh roots here) I think it sounds much nicer than Steren.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 19/01/2019 17:28

I'm in Cornwall and Steren isn't really used, even here. I think Seren has a much lovelier sound.

My cousin has used it but her husband is Welsh.

If you like Cornish names there are lots that are very pretty with lovely meanings.

Lowenna (Joy)
Kerenza (Love)
Sennon (place name)

Etc...

Thesearmsofmine · 19/01/2019 17:28

Oh yes Stella is nice and unusual too.

Cosmoa · 19/01/2019 17:34

Steren makes me think of Sternum.. Plus I'd be worried people would shorten it to Ste or something!

CloserIAm2Fine · 19/01/2019 17:41

Seren is lovely (I love in wales so used to seeing it)

It’s far more common as a name than Star is in English so I don’t think it’s really comparable in that way. I know loads of young Serens

SilverySurfer · 19/01/2019 17:56

Seren is lovely, Steren makes me think of Steradent.

WisdomOfCrowds · 19/01/2019 17:59

We considered both but went with neither. i'm Cornish, dp has welsh family. I love Seren but really wanted something Cornish, but Steren sounds too much like sterile to me. We went with Merryn in the end :)

GB54 · 19/01/2019 18:43

I really like Seren, I love Welsh names in general.

threesenoughthanks · 19/01/2019 18:49

Yep another vote for Seren. Steren sounds like a contraceptive to me.

mummyofboys30 · 19/01/2019 18:52

Would Seren go nicely as middle name to Matilda? So Matilda Seren?

OP posts:
GB54 · 19/01/2019 19:05

Yes, I’d say so!

AngeloMysterioso · 19/01/2019 19:17

Seren makes me think of Sarin gas.

SemperIdem · 19/01/2019 20:18

I’d go with Seren.

Matilda Seren is lovely.
