Neither am I Smile

MessyMummy15 · 17/01/2019 08:58

I'd guess Air-iss

tammytoby · 17/01/2019 09:00

Surely there is only one way, Er-is?!

cloudtree · 17/01/2019 09:02

I don't, because Ive never heard of the name

erja · 17/01/2019 09:02

I wasn't sure if it could be,
Er-is (like Ferris without the F)
Air-is
Eer-is

It's the Greek god name so I thought I must be silly not knowing how to pronounce it!

Sort of half-way between Eric and Air-ic

Eris - Greek goddess of strife.
More about her here: www.theoi.com/Daimon/Eris.html

florascotia2 · 17/01/2019 09:26

Sorry - that should say : The first part of the word sort of half way between the sounds as in ...

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 09:28

like Eric.

Not sure why you'd want to name your child after a goddess of strife, though.

MikeUniformMike · 17/01/2019 11:11

ee-ris, I think?

tammytoby · 17/01/2019 12:44

I'd pronounce it like it is written: Er-is. Like Eric or Erin.

Shadow1234 · 17/01/2019 14:31

My first thought was ferris without the f

SemperIdem · 22/01/2019 11:56

Eh-riss

Wasn’t that the name of Sherlock Holmes sister, in the tv programme?

Also the goddess of discord?

A nice sounding name, all the same

Icklepup · 22/01/2019 14:21

Yeah, Ferris without the f

Nifflerbowtruckle · 22/01/2019 14:29

Eh-ris, I love the name. It's a name I would use.

rainylake · 23/01/2019 17:01

E-ris. (ie like Eric but an s at the end).

But (as someone who studied Classics), personally I would struggle to get calling a kid after the goddess of spite, strife, discord, rivalry, etc. She’s not a nice goddess. Caused the Trojan war and the deaths of thousands for a laugh, because she didn’t like to see people being happy and getting along. (The only positive thing you can say about her is a passage from the poet Hesiod about how as well as the bad type of Eris, there’s a good type that causes people to compete against each other and so get better at their skills).

But don’t know if the name also comes from another culture with a different connotation (and so possibly a different pronunciation)
