No more children for me, but i keep looking at 3 week old DD2 and thinking she looks likeva Molly. Not the name we've gone with and completely doesnt go with our surname so will be sticking with the name we have given her but just looking for thoughts on Molly

I love it.

HollyBen · 16/01/2019 13:52

I love it. It was on our shortlist for DD. Really doesn't go with our surname either though.

Luckingfovely · 16/01/2019 13:55

I don't like it - it sounds very weak to me

Ethel80 · 16/01/2019 14:01

My friend is from Brighton and said at school Molly was used as an insult. I can't remember what it meant but it's always put me off the name since.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 16/01/2019 14:02

I don’t really like it, but I don’t like girly nickname type names- they can be outgrown very quickly.

I sympathise with the post-birth name confusion though- when DD was born I was convinced that she looked like an Imogen much to DH’s frustration.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/01/2019 14:06

I have a Molly. I wish I'd thought more about it now, though. Although it is a nice name and really suits her.
Congratulations BTW. I remember your threads when you were pregnant

PonyPals · 16/01/2019 14:20

Congratulations!
Really don't like Molly... sounds twee. But I don't like Poppy or Daisy either

17caterpillars1mouse · 16/01/2019 14:22

Thank you. See its totally not my usual style (too cutesy) so i dont know why i keep looking at her and thinking Molly. Her name is Elspeth btw which i feel has more spark, but doesnt seem to fully fit her atm

tammytoby · 16/01/2019 14:23

I also dislike Molly. It feels fat and cutesy at the same time.

LeslieYep · 16/01/2019 14:24

I loved Molly when I was younger but I looked up the meaning and was disappointed to find it was 'bitter one'. Went off it a little after that.
I still think it's a pretty name, and people rarely look up meanings! I agree with PP's though about it sounding weak.

Jens303 · 16/01/2019 14:25

love it but slang for MDMA or Ecstasy

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 16/01/2019 14:33

Elspeth is a great name, but it doesn’t fit a tiny curled up newborn in the same way it will a cheeky toddler or sparky child and beyond.

It’ll just take time for her to own it, but it’ll happen!

Phebes · 16/01/2019 14:34

I much prefer Elspeth, Molly is very cutesy. Elspeth is great! Congratulations Flowers

MightyMoose · 16/01/2019 14:42

Love Molly but then I know a fabulous one.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 16/01/2019 14:44

This might be why the pp friend from Brighton said it was an insult, from Wikipedia

The word molly (also spelt as molley, mollie, mally) is a pet-form of the female forename Mary, and had two main connotations in 18th century English.[8] The first one is close to the word moll, designating a lower-class girl or woman, occasionally a prostitute. The second one is classified as slang, defining an effeminate, usually homosexual, male

Soubriquet · 16/01/2019 14:46

My dd is Molly

Loved it when she was a baby and still love it now (she’s 5)

Inktank · 16/01/2019 14:50

I'm not particularly keen on Molly, but you could always use it as an "at home" nickname despite it having no connection to Elspeth.

Elspeth is a lovely name BTW Smile

MacarenaFerreiro · 16/01/2019 14:52

Elspeth is a great name :-)

Growing up in Edinburgh, Molly meant unfashionable or dowdy clothes - so "look at what she's wearing, it's so molly!" Plus the only Molly I know is in my daughter's circle of friends and is not a pleasant girl.

LetsSplashMummy · 16/01/2019 15:51

Elspeth is lovely but not baby cute, which might be the wobble. You aren't a baby long though, so stick with Elspeth - would calling her Ellie while she's little feel more cute?

tammytoby · 16/01/2019 15:53

Elspeth is much nicer and more classy than Molly!

TheLovelyOtherDinosaur · 16/01/2019 16:02

Elspeth is so much nicer than Molly. Could you not call her Elsie for short?

rytonsister · 16/01/2019 16:05

I have a 21 year old Molly. Think she likes her name .

rytonsister · 16/01/2019 16:07

And she is supermodel beautiful and very very tall.... naturally beautiful. Nor fat or cutesy at all for those saying that!

Picknickers · 17/01/2019 01:15

My goddaughter is Molly. She's 12, clever and absolutely gorgeous. I love the name because I love her.

Tuesday811 · 18/01/2019 14:49

I love Molly but like Elspeth too. What puts me off Elspeth is the potential nickname of Elsie
