Is Emma dated?

Talking baby names with colleagues today as one is expecting a DD later this spring. I suggested the name Emma and colleague burst out laughing saying it was as incongruous as calling a baby Kevin or Steve. This surprised me, as I see it as a fairly timeless name - I've always loved it. Or is she right? Options please!

It's timeless and classic, plus I'd imagine it's not often used these days.

sue51 · 15/01/2019 20:14

I think its' a timeless classic and very pretty.

NameChange30 · 15/01/2019 20:15

Your colleague is weird.

How many Jane Austen characters are called Kevin or Steve?!

dementedpixie · 15/01/2019 20:15

I have one who is 15

sue51 · 15/01/2019 20:15

It's not its'

MrsMaryMooFace · 15/01/2019 20:15

It's a classic

SundayGirl86 · 15/01/2019 20:19

Emma is lovely. It’ll never date either.

camelfinger · 15/01/2019 20:22

Kind of. I like it, but it does sound a little odd hearing the name Emma called out in nursery amongst the sea of Ellas and Millies.

erja · 15/01/2019 20:26

I think I'm in the minority to think it's definitely dated! It'd be strange to me to hear it for an under 16 now. Not a necessarily bad name though, and clearly others think it's a classic.

Celebelly · 15/01/2019 20:36

I think it's a timeless and pretty name that isn't too popular that there will be multiples in a class. We are considering it for our little girl! Definitely not in the same ranks as something like Tracy or Linda, which are very much of a certain era.

RedDwarves · 15/01/2019 20:40

No. Emma is a timeless classic.

E20mom · 15/01/2019 20:43

She's wrong. It's a classic name

SwedishEdith · 15/01/2019 20:43

My year 9 has about half a dozen friends called Emma.

SweetheartNeckline · 15/01/2019 20:44

It's lovely. I have 3 kids aged from 2 to 7 and only know two as well.

snowone · 15/01/2019 20:45

Emma is beautiful and I think still ranks quite highly in the top 100 girls names in the UK

HairyToity · 15/01/2019 20:45

I know two Emma's who are both 4 years old. Not dated at all.

BigGreenOlives · 15/01/2019 20:45

Emma and Hannah are the most popular names at my daughter’s secondary school, I think there are 11 Emmas in a school with 750 or so girls.

mogtheexcellent · 15/01/2019 20:47

Have a 4yo one and met a newborn before Christmas. Not dated and easy to pronounce and spell.

It's in the top 100 with 1500 born in 2014 and 1000 in 2017.

Your colleague probably wants a unique name.

mathanxiety · 15/01/2019 20:47

It will never date. It's a classic.

missmouse101 · 15/01/2019 20:49

Extremely boring name, overrated and done to death imo.

DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2019 20:50

It's a classic, it's timeless, it's been used since the Middle Ages so has loads of history, and it's my favourite name ever which I didn't get to use as I have all boys Sad Grin

Curlyshabtree · 15/01/2019 20:50

Massively popular in the US. Elsewhere a timeless classic.

RoseMartha · 15/01/2019 20:52

It is not dated.

I also know two little Kevin's who are 6 and 7.

MarchInHappiness · 15/01/2019 20:55

Emma is a classic (I think its better than Emily), not as popular as in the 80s/90s but still a solid name. I know a few of all ages.

Cant really compare to it to the likes of Kevin, Samantha etc

Tfoot75 · 15/01/2019 21:02

I think it’s more towards Emily, Sophie, Hannah than Louise, Rebecca or Claire (all names that were very popular in the 80s) ie still a classic rather than firmly dated in the 80s.
