Girls names India Emilia or Esme

Please can I have thoughts on our girls shortlist...

India - My favourite, I know a lot of people think place names are tacky but I don’t personally view India the same way as it’s been in use for centuries. I see it as a lesser used classic?

Emilia - I like this written down but I’ve never loved Amelia and obviously they sound so similar, also very popular?!

Esme - I like this

I want the feel of the name to be pretty, classic yet not so overused that it’s dull...

I also love Grace but that’s been used by two friends within 6 months so our unfortunately.

Love them all but you’re right Emilia is becoming so popular that it’s loosing the unusual/pretty tone.

India and same are both nice, I would probably sway to esme as it’s slightly more delicate and unusual

icouldwriteabook · 15/01/2019 07:32

*esme not same, I guess she’d have to autocorrect her name quite a lot though. Hmm

legalseagull · 15/01/2019 07:34

I love Esme. Very classic and elegant. Personally I think India is a bit chavvy. Isn't katie Hopkins daughter called India but she said she doesn't like place names?! Grin

Inktank · 15/01/2019 07:45
  1. Emilia
  2. Esme
  3. India
comebacksoonsusan · 15/01/2019 07:48

I think there's a certain type of west London trustafarian who might well be called India.
Esme is the nicest of the three I think.

Sessy19 · 15/01/2019 07:50

India is a lovely name. Of your three, it’s my favourite. If it hadn’t been suggested by OHs exW for their daughter, it would make my list 😋

A/Emilia, Evie, Ella...I consider these to be more ‘chavvy’ or ‘tacky’, but because they are just so common ‘round here.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/01/2019 10:08

I like India, but prefer Indya (Indy).
Indya Grace is lovely !

Divgirl2 · 15/01/2019 10:27

Esme is become very common at the minute, and I don't love Emelia, I know it is a real name but my brain seems to think it's a snowflake spelling.

India, however, I love. Totally agree that it's an underused classic.

ReginaPhalange89 · 15/01/2019 10:36

None of them are really to my taste but I do think Esme is pretty . That's my favourite of the 3

Amelia/Emilia are the same name to me. I pronounce them in exactly the same way and just class them as one name, sorry lol. Too common.

India I'm not keen on at all. indie is nicer

Lydia55y · 15/01/2019 10:37

Indya - How do you pronounce that? The spelling just doesn't look as pretty to me as India

I know of an Indie Grace but I prefer full names rather than shortened versions, less trendy/twee? (and I think it sounds a bit like In Disgrace when said together!)

I love pretty but classic names and my favourites always seem to begin with a vowel. E.g. I also love Olive but my partner doesn't like that and Olivia is too popular around us. Our chosen middle name is Alice or Florence so...

India Alice
India Florence

I love India, it was top of my list if I'd had a girl.

alwaysneedgin · 15/01/2019 10:57

I have an Esme. Pronounced Esmay. Only trouble we have is people calling her Esmee occasionally but very rare. I've never had to spell it out on phone etc. She's 8.

I also really like India. Iris was another in the same family for us, and Alice.

Gumball54 · 15/01/2019 11:12

Emilia! Always think it’s prettier than Amelia and pronounce it slightly different.

golddustwomen · 15/01/2019 11:13

India definitely

2isabella2 · 15/01/2019 11:32

Emilia is the only one I like at all, I think it's beautiful.

ZebraKid71 · 15/01/2019 12:06

I love India but the other two are very common in my area. I'd go India Alice as India Florence is a bit place name heavy!

RiverTam · 15/01/2019 12:10

Emilia will be pronouced/spelt Amelia - it'#s the nicest of your choices, though
Esme will be pronounced the way you don't want it pronounced (as a Brit I would expect it to be pronounced Esmee but obviously lots of people go for the French pronunciation)
India is a nice name, though some people will think it chavvy but you can probably ignore them

Lydia55y · 15/01/2019 12:25

I didn't even think about Florence as a place name...good point! Florence, India, Georgia, Charlotte, Victoria etc I associate as classic girls names, I forget about the place connection. As apposed to more modern place names like Paris, Brooklyn, Chyna etc. Although I fear this sounds a bit Katie Hopkins/snobby, which is not my intention they just have different feels for me personally.

just what we're used to - I'm sure in a generation's time lots of names will be the absolute norm - maybe even classic!

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 15/01/2019 12:35

Esme and Emilia are lovely.

tierraJ · 15/01/2019 12:50

I've always liked Emilia

daisypond · 15/01/2019 13:17

Emilia out of the ones on your list, but you'll get people spelling it wrongly, but I do like it. India is one of my worst-ever names, with its connotations of exploitation and the British Raj. It's not hugely old - just 19th century. Esme seems too nicknamey and bland for my taste.

Lydia55y · 15/01/2019 15:43

India as a given name predates the British Raj. I don't see why the connotations with exploitation should be any stronger than other place names say Georgia with it's history of slavery...a very common name which doesn't seem to attract the same negativity.
