Welsh girls names

I'm expecting #2 in a few months and struggling for girls names. We have a little boy with a common Welsh name. DP likes Ffion but I'm not entirely sold, not sure why. Can't use Carys, Seren, Anwen or Bethan.

Any suggestions? Thank you :)

Can anyone tell me how you pronounce Eira please? Thank you

MikeUniformMike · 13/01/2019 14:41

There are lots of that's already discussed it. It's a very short Eh? sound followed by ra (like in rabbit).

I've never heard of the name Sianedd.

missmouse101 · 14/01/2019 20:51

Sioned?

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 21:07

I've just heard Siwan, i think it's lovely.

donajimena · 18/01/2019 21:11

Eira is pronounced Hey (no H though just the Ei) Ra (do you remember She-RaWink)
So Ey-ra

donajimena · 18/01/2019 21:12

On that subject I like Eiry. Ey - ree

Cosmos45 · 18/01/2019 21:13

MikeUniformMike can I ask you if Blodwen/Blodwyn is a common name or is it very old fashioned? I know a Blodwen, shortened to Blod and I wonder if this is a very unusual name or perhaps just very old fashioned. Sorry to derail thread..

pineapplebryanbrown · 18/01/2019 21:17

Despite not being Welsh i love the Welsh names i can say! I saw Llinos recently and thought it was beautiful but hopeless outside Wales.

Is Sian terribly dated?

Unihorn · 18/01/2019 21:18

I loved Mair but my English husband can't pronounce it. I also loved Llio but we only seem to produce girls.

Unihorn · 18/01/2019 21:19

i only know Sian's who are about 20 and older so I would say not really of the time now.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2019 15:38

Sian (circumflex on the a) was very popular in the 1960s.
It started to get used outside Wales where it's pronounced Shahn, which isn't quite the same (and seems a bit naff cos it's just Jane).
The welsh name is still lovely.

Blodwen. In the first few decades of the 20th century, -wen and -wyn names were all the rage. Boys names ended in -wyn, girls' names in - wen.
No boy or girl as far as I know was ever called Blodwyn, but Blodwen was fairly popular. It is very great-grannyish but you could use it. At least it is reasonably easy to pronounce.

The only -wen names that have stood the test of time are Olwen, Bronwen and Branwen.
Anwen is quite popular but is likely to appeal to non-welsh speakers.
Please do not spell these names -wyn.

Siwan. This is welsh for Joan. Only one downside - some say the Si part as Sh, some as Shi and some as Si (like in 'sing'). All the versions are nice. The last version is the one that gets used in the part of Wales I come from, and I know 3.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2019 15:42

Sorry, just to make it clear. Siân is not said as Shahn by welsh speakers.
Similarly, Siôn does not sound exactly like Shaun.

ErictheGuineaPig · 19/01/2019 15:46

I've never heard Sian pronounced any other way than Shahn by anyone in my part of Wales. I can't think how else it would be pronounced?!

ErictheGuineaPig · 19/01/2019 15:48

Or do you mean it's more like sharn?

pineapplebryanbrown · 19/01/2019 16:21

I hear Siwan like this Syu - a/un - almost like the su sound in casual and the ending not quite Anne but a cross between a and u.

How should Sian sound? I thought it was Shahn?

MikeUniformMike · 22/01/2019 13:41

The â is not the same. I'm not sure how to describe it but it's not the 'ah' sound. It's similar but not the long ah or ar sound.
www.pronouncenames.com/pronounce/sian is about right.

It might sound a bit nitpicky but it's a bit grating.
