Evangeline or Josephine? and why?

Thank you!

Evangeline without a doubt. But it is a marmite name. Personally, I like that, having grown up with a safe and dull name myself.
I think it is beautiful - to me Josephine sounds harsh and ugly. But I think we must all hear things differently or we would all be using the same name!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 08/01/2019 08:27

If it helps, I know an Evangeline who is never called Vange. Evie, yes, but not Vange.

MaidenMotherCrone · 08/01/2019 08:30

Evangeline sounds like a nun.

Josephine is the better of the two.

RedDwarves · 08/01/2019 08:57

I don't think either of them are "pretty" names, but Josephine is a fabulous name. I've always loved it.

Bouchie · 08/01/2019 09:03

I think the reason the OP os having a hard time over pretty is because pretty has connotations of being stereotypically 'girly', delicate and nice. Not inherently awful things but seemed quite old fashioned. Personally I want a name for my daughter that is linked to being strong, beautiful and intelligent.

BikeRunSki · 08/01/2019 09:07

I much prefer Josephine; it is one of my favourite names. I know 3, of various ages, all known as Josie.

BlackPrism · 08/01/2019 09:07

Evangeline

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 08/01/2019 09:08

Josephine is divine. I would have used it for a girl.

FayFortune · 08/01/2019 09:11

I prefer Josephine.

Evangelist, evangelical, (John and Vangelis!) all come to mind with Evangeline.

comebacksoonsusan · 08/01/2019 09:13

Josephine

Gazelda · 08/01/2019 09:37

Josephine. It reminds me of Jo in Little Women. A feminine name which is associated with a strong, independent, romantic character.

TatianaLarina · 08/01/2019 10:01

Josephine.

Evangeline sounds like vage to me.

MarshaBradyo · 08/01/2019 10:03

Josephine
Evangeline doesn’t look pretty as a word

Didiusfalco · 08/01/2019 10:22

Evangeline is much nicer. I don’t like Josephine, to me it reminds me too much of the 80s trend for masculine names used for girls i.e Stephanie, michaela, Bryony. I think of Evangeline from the Hose of Elliot too, who was a great character.

Jessabean · 08/01/2019 10:28

Josephine but I may be a little bias as it's mine and my OH's top choice for our little girl due in April! We love the vast array of nn choices - Josie, Jo and think it has an elegant pretty sound to it but also makes me think of strong female characters e.g. Jo March from little women and Josephine Butler (famous woman's activist/feminist).

Evangeline I can see the prettiness to but personally I'm not a fan of. For some reason also makes me think of nuns I'm not sure why. Think maybe one of the nuns from call the midwife was called it 🤷‍♀️
Nickname wise for it Evie is sweet but extremely popular at the moment. The other forerunner for me was Evelyn with Evie as nn as is a name I've always loved & I equally think is pretty and elegant but the popularity has put me off using it tbh.

Sockwomble · 08/01/2019 14:39

Josephine was the name I would have used for a girl. I also think of the Jo March and nun connections.

CarolinenotCarolyn · 08/01/2019 16:30

I prefer Josephine.

cptartapp · 08/01/2019 16:46

Josephine

DramaAlpaca · 08/01/2019 17:01

I don't think either of them are pretty exactly, they are both beautiful strong feminine names. I really like both of them.

If I had to choose, it would be Josephine.

The reason I'd pick Josephine is that Evangeline could be perceived as a religious name and I am not. I would happily use it as a middle name.

WolfHallster · 08/01/2019 17:11

I think they’re both pretty clunky, inelegant, unattractive names.

I hate Evangeline because of the awful ‘vange’ sound, and I dislike Josephine because I don’t like girls’ names that are just boys’ names with an extra bit on the end. I also hate Bernadette, Philippa, Thomasina, Wilhelmina - all clunky sounding.

Overall, they’re unlikely to be known by their full names once they get to secondary school, so it comes down to which nickname you prefer - Evie or Josie.

I think Josie is lovely, while Evie is nice but far too popular at the moment. Dd is a young leader at a Brownie pack and has 10 Brownies whose names are some variation on Eve/Evie/Eva/Evangeline/Ava/Niamh/Neve That’s a third of the kids.

jnewall · 08/01/2019 23:16

My name is Josephine! I get called Josie for short, only downside is I could never find it on anything as a child such as cups/pens, whereas all my friends found their names!

HoratioNightboy · 08/01/2019 23:34

I think Evangeline is the prettier of the two as I find Josephine a somewhat ugly name that's near the top of my hate list. However Evangeline is far too frilly for my taste, but Van seems like the best possible shortening.

Sophronia · 09/01/2019 14:49

Josephine as there are so many Evies, Evas, Evelyns etc at the moment.

MikeUniformMike · 09/01/2019 16:17

Josephine. Not keen on Evangeline.

pilates · 09/01/2019 17:43

Both lovely
