The name Emerson

So I read through an old thread about this and I was a bit sad cause I really like the name..

Would you consider it more of a girl or a boy name?

What would a boy be called for short? We can only think of 'E' or 'Sonny'

I know it's traditionally a boys name but it's been used as a girls name over the past few years.

I really liked the name Emmeline/Emalyn for a girl if it was a girl so I don't know if that's what has drawn me to it.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea! Name suggestions that are similar would be appreciated too!

Middle name would be George

It's a boy's name, as it ends in 'son'. You really can't use it for a girl. I remember the other post. I made a sarky comment about 70s supergroups if I remember correctly.

ElizabethMainwaring · 03/01/2019 23:27

Are you sure people have used it as a girl's name?

Sophronia · 03/01/2019 23:27

Definitely better for a boy.

callkiki · 03/01/2019 23:28

I knew a beautiful little girl called Emerson or Emmy for short.

DressingGownPlease · 03/01/2019 23:30

I would think boy's name. It's awful (sorry).

Similar names:
Grayson
Hunter
Cooper
Carter
...these aren't my cup of tea but are along the same sort of surname vibe as Emerson.

RortyDogOfTheRemove · 03/01/2019 23:30

It's a bad name, whether you propose to give it to a boy or a girl. In fact, it isn't a name at all. You'd be better off using George as a first name, if you have a boy (or even Georgina/Georgiana if you have a girl). A bit dull, but at least they are proper names.

Emerson Lake? Give me a break.

RortyDogOfTheRemove · 03/01/2019 23:32

DressingGown is right: all of the names suggested are on a par with Emerson. But they are all awful. Far better to use a proper first name, rather than a surname.

AuntieStella · 03/01/2019 23:32

Boys name

It's a transferred surname, and I really don't think they work on girls. (Though I suppose it suits gender fluidity)

MitziK · 03/01/2019 23:33

Why not switch the names around for George Emerson - - - -? (I am of course, assuming that you don't have the surname Lake or Palmer).

Or Emerton - nicknamed Tony?

Emmett? Nicknamed Doc?

The OH inherited the middle name Hamilton from his grandfather. I laughed, everybody laughs when they hear it for the first time, but I actually quite like it. as did another MNer on a thread that was rapidly deleted for offending people with kids named Something-Mae

(Still wondering how I've found myself on a baby name thread, I must have tapped as the page was still scrolling)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 03/01/2019 23:35

I don’t like surnames as first names, but I’ve heard worse. Definitely not for a girl. It does remind me of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Emmeline is a nice girl’s name. Prefer this spelling.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 03/01/2019 23:38

How about Emile, Emlyn, Emrys?

Picknickers · 03/01/2019 23:48

Emrys is lovely. Emerson sounds like Emma's son. Could get very confusing!

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2019 23:51

It sounds like the name of a Brazilian soccer player.

It's definitely a male name. I don't like it for a boy but it would be ridiculous on a girl.

LearningMySelfWorth · 03/01/2019 23:58

I like Emerson. I'd go with Em, Emmy, Sonny and possibly Merry because of lord of the rings Grin

MumUnderTheMoon · 04/01/2019 00:12

Emerson is great and sonny is a fine nn but you could just use the full name. I've heard of girls called emerie it means powerful.

MollyHuaCha · 04/01/2019 00:38

I know of a female Emerson. I still don't like the name. Emma and Emily are much nicer.

MonaChopsis · 04/01/2019 00:47

The only Emerson I know is female. I don't like it much I have to say. I also know an Emer and an Eimear (with fada) and vastly prefer both of those.

Shadow1234 · 04/01/2019 01:50

Not very similar to Emerson, but what about Ellis for a boy?

scrivette · 04/01/2019 02:02

I like it, but only for a boy.

TheRedFox · 04/01/2019 02:28

Definitely a boy's name to my ear - see Emerson Fittipaldi the Brazilian racing driver from the 1970s.

octoberfarm · 04/01/2019 02:44

I quite like it, but I live somewhere where surnames are quite normal to use as first names. I'd assume boy but wouldn't be surprised to find a girl with the name Emerson. Not sure if it's your sort of thing, but would Beckett be an option?

flumpybear · 04/01/2019 02:51

Love it, went to school with an Emerson too - boy

Not sure about for a girl emersan emersyn emersen?!

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/01/2019 07:31

I know two boys called Emerson. Really don’t think it would work on a girl.

WrithingHomeForChristmas · 04/01/2019 07:37

It's a boys name. Surname-y names tend to get a bad response on here but I like them.

preggersteach · 04/01/2019 07:38

@DramaAlpaca it was the name of a Brazilian footballer! If you live in the north east area of the country that it what the name will be associated with for many
