How important are initials?

We have 99% decided on a name.

The initials will be GIT, is that an issue?

Considering throwing in a second middle name that I love to change it to GFIT.

Or does it not matter?

Secondary schools often have the children's initials on their PE kit. Please don't inflict these initials on your child they will be a source of ridicule! Sad

JohnnyKarate · 03/01/2019 20:24

We used to have our initials on our pegs at primary and then on our lockers at secondary. Don’t do it OP. Mine are BFG and even though it’s nothing bad it’s not a nickname I ever wanted, but I was called it my whole school life 😂

You could always change your 2 middle names round and make GIFT. Or would that be a bit weird?

I did half consider that but thought it was ridiculous 😂

My first and last initials are BS which mean all my school/college and uni auto generated emails start with BS..... My first and middle initials are BJ and that wasn't fun in secondary school so I'd think about it a bit more, but I'd not add in an F name because that is so twee and cutesy they wont thank you for it.

I'm sorry I don't understand this bit of your post?

I mean they may be teased for it when in secondary school, it happens. I think it's a sweet idea but the likelihood of it is that they'll be teased for it.

ColdCottage · 03/01/2019 21:32

I'd just add another middle name. Job done.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 03/01/2019 21:43

I'm going against the majority here & saying I don't think it matters that much.... following marriage I've ended up with the initials CJD, used daily at work but after the initial snigger & eye roll from me it doesn't really come up very often

ReginaPhalange89 · 03/01/2019 21:51

I don't think GIT is that bad to be fair. Do people with middle names use their full initials? I don't have one so I wasn't sure . I just assumed people used their first and last .
If it bothers you then I'd either leave the middle name out or add the other one you like.

Sexnotgender · 03/01/2019 22:04

It's not horrendous, it's not like ASS or DIK. Just wanted to canvas opinion.

Will likely add the F name, it was actually the planned middle name but we changed our minds to the I one, will just use both to avoid any issues.

Yeah, don't do it

I knew a girl at school whose dad had been teased because his initials spelt a word, a slightly funny word but not massively so, about as bad as OLD maybe. Because of this he decided not to give his children middle names, but apparently didn't think about the fact that only two initials can still have comic potential. They were both... something about as silly as WC.

ZebraKid71 · 04/01/2019 22:31

I wouldn't.. In my current job, and previous two we have used initials regularly and for email addresses. I get a lot less hassle since I changed from my maiden name when I got married as my initials were KFC. Not the most professional way to sign legal documents haha!

All my school aged nieces and nephews who plays sports have their initials embroidered on their kit.

Cazastrophe · 05/01/2019 14:21

Yes, initials are important. At work, I have to input data using colleagues initials.
One is VD since she married and we have a laugh about it.
I wouldn’t have an extra middle name, just change the I name or switch it round so it’s IGT.

E20mom · 05/01/2019 14:25

Kids will notice that! It's not a good idea

rosemabel · 05/01/2019 14:30

I don't think it matters in the slightest. Not once have I or any of my friends or family given a second thought to our initials or anyone else's

clary · 05/01/2019 23:12

I was at school with a girl whose initials were WC... that's all I can tell you about her but even 40+ years later I remember that her initials were the loo 😄 think again op

Thetigerwhocameto · 06/01/2019 02:32

I became KKK through marriage, when using/wearing initials I simply use KK.

DH wanted DC1 if they were a boy to have initials DIK (he liked the names I don’t honk he clocked the initials) thankfully DC was a girl!

I have worked in places where it is common to use first initial and first two letters of surname. We had a CBA and a TIT. They changed the latter.

It is also common to use first two letters of surname and first two of first name. Poor JABA eespecially as he is a little on the larger size.

I haven't worked anywhere th hat has used a middle I initial.
