What do you think? For a boy or a girl? Should it be Charles or Charlotte on birth certificate? What type of child does it make you think of? Is it “posh” or the opposite?

Thanks!

Charlie is lovely. I know posh and non posh Charlie's. I know a boy Charlie named after girl Charlie. It works well for both :)

Coldtoes28 · 01/01/2019 10:32

It's a little common. I don't think it's posh - the Charlie's I know (both my age and chidren) have mostly been very much the opposite - nice though

Thanks Itsallwhite Smile

Put Charles or Charlotte on the birth certificate, that way they will have the choice whether to use Charlie or their birth name when they grow up.

It's neither posh nor common.

abcriskringle · 01/01/2019 10:41

Lots of Charlies about - Charles and Charlotte are lovely long versions. Plenty of both about at the state school where I teach (pupils and staff) so would not consider them posh.

daisypond · 01/01/2019 10:46

It's OK as a short form, but as a name in itself I'd think it was the opposite of posh. Charles or Charlotte on birth certificate are better.

blueskiespls · 01/01/2019 10:48

I have a 12 yr old Charlie in my family. He's cheeky, lovable, kind and fun :) he also has 2 other Charlie friends in his class they are nice boys too!

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 01/01/2019 10:51

Thanks all! I normally am in the ‘long form on birth certificate’ camp, but I really don’t like Charles. Seems a bit odd to put a name on there that you don’t like and have no intention of using.

I love the name for not or a girl. Usually for a girl it's spelt Charley isn't it?

AppleKatie · 01/01/2019 10:56

It’s a name that spans classes. I prefer it for a girl and with Charlotte on the BC.

The upper classes are much more likely to use ‘Lottie’ as the NN for Charlotte though.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/01/2019 11:04

Charlie is nice for a boy. Not keen for a girl.

Sophronia · 01/01/2019 11:58

It’s so popular for boys where I live.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 01/01/2019 12:34

Really, AppleKatie? I wouldn’t have thought that about Lottie!

Thanks all for sharing your opinion! I prefer it for a boy. I don’t like the Charley spelling for a girl, although it does seem more feminine.

Absolutely that’s my ime.

Charley50 · 01/01/2019 14:12

I know Charlotte called Lottie or Charley, or Charlie. I would say the differentiation is class related, just personal preference.

MikeUniformMike · 01/01/2019 14:16

A boy could be Charlton.

RuthW · 01/01/2019 14:43

I know a female Charlie (full name). She gets called Charles for short!

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 01/01/2019 14:50

MikeUniformMike - My dad would love that Grin

That’s funny, RuthW!

Then go for it. I prefer Charles but Charlton is good too. Not keen on Charlie for a girl but I know 2.

PastaSauceHoarder · 01/01/2019 15:00

I love Charlie for a little boy, had my daughter been a boy she definitely would've been Charlie. Smile

I'm actually not too keen on it for a girl though, I much prefer Lottie as a nickname for Charlotte.

MumUnderTheMoon · 01/01/2019 15:06

If you like Charlie then call your little one that, I don't understand why people put a different name from the one they like on the birth certificate. People on here worry way too much about nicknames.

Princesspeachy0 · 01/01/2019 19:14

I love it for both. No need for full name on BC

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 01/01/2019 19:23

I've a big Charles I thought he'd want Charlie as his nickname but nope but even since little insists on Charles.

Definitely use Charles on the birth certificate. It's a fine name.
