What are the most popular girls names being used at private schools at the moment?

In my days it was Elizabeth’s and Katrina’s.
What are they now?

“There is no way a school would choose pupils in that way.”
Why not? Employers have been shown to.

lattesforlife · 04/01/2019 10:32

westwing out of a class of 9 kids, 3 of them are Henry in my little boys class. He’s one of them Blush

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2019 10:32

Few Anabelles, Holly’s Amelia’s and Sophie’s at DDs school.
She’s the only Grace in her year but there are others older than her.

MariaNovella · 04/01/2019 10:33

Surely a school wouldn’t throw out an application because of a child’s given name?

I have said repeatedly that first names are one criterion, not the only criterion!

HopeGarden · 04/01/2019 10:50

I have said repeatedly that first names are one criterion, not the only criterion!

But still a criterion? So how far down your list does that come, then? How much better than an Olivia does a Kenidi-Mai need to be to get in?

Westwing1 · 04/01/2019 11:05

Lattesforlife not so many Henrys here, only one in my sons year (great name btw), it's the Harrys we are overwhelmed with!

MariaNovella · 04/01/2019 11:17

How much better than an Olivia does a Kenidi-Mai need to be to get in?

To what criterion does your “better” refer to?

Buffymum · 04/01/2019 11:23

Jemima
Bunty
Florence
Kate
Toby
George
Henry
Isabel
Alexander
Hamish

HopeGarden · 04/01/2019 11:30

To what criterion does your “better” refer to?

Surely the criteria your school uses to select pupils are ranked in some way?

As in, some criteria are worth more than others?
E.g. you might have something like Criteria 1 = parents ability to prove they can comfortably pay fees, Criteria 2 = child meets some minimum academic ability level and so on.

How far down your list of criteria do you go before deciding it’s time to bin applications because of the child’s given name?

MariaNovella · 04/01/2019 11:39

Surely the criteria your school uses to select pupils are ranked in some way?

Of course. I want to know which criterion (or criteria) you were referring to that you think might be trumped by the first name criterion.

Say there are 10 criteria for admissions. 5 of those criteria are ranked out of 10. The other 5 are ranked out of 5. The potential total points for an applicant is 75. Chardonnay-Beyoncé gets 0/10 and Alexandra gets 10/10 for the name criterion. Chardonnay-Beyoncé has still potentially got 65/75 points and may still score better than Alexandra.

SumAndSubstance · 04/01/2019 11:57

I still can’t tell if Maria is taking the piss 😂. She’s wrong, anyway.

ComeOnComeOnComeOnGetThroughIt · 04/01/2019 11:59

Folks. Really. Maria is definitely taking the piss. And very ably, I might add.

SumAndSubstance · 04/01/2019 12:01

Oh yes, it is good piss-taking!

Looneytune253 · 04/01/2019 12:20

Shame they didn't teach you how to use apostrophes at your private school,

Or the correct use of commas at yours @BiggerBoat1 😂

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2019 12:32

We actually changed Shardonai- Mai’s name to Grace so we could get in
We will have to think about Jiorndane - Kai next year. Probably Henry or Alex

drdoalot · 04/01/2019 13:52

How many points would Maria get? 10 for amusement

ADastardlyThing · 04/01/2019 13:59

Loving Maria's work on this thread Grin

Overplayed in some parts but still, excellent effort Star

turnipsaretheonlyveg · 04/01/2019 14:06

My dc's school is international and I think Kia. Is the only name that there are a few of. Other than that it is a very broad international mix. Names that might be viewed one way in one country, for example surname first names, have a different connotation in another country.

cathyandclare · 04/01/2019 14:22

‘Mind your p’s and q’s’. This is acceptable grammar.

Off the subject but my mind is blown by this.

ComeOnComeOnComeOnGetThroughIt · 04/01/2019 14:22

Also, before anyone else rushes in with a list of the names of their little darlings' classmates to establish their MC credentials , they may want to consider the fact the the OP posted and then disappeared. I suspect he/she is sitting back and having a good laugh.

cathyandclare · 04/01/2019 14:23

So blown, I failed to put it in bold.

PaintBySticker · 04/01/2019 14:27

Weird thread.

Round here the majority of private school pupils are of south Asian heritage. Elsewhere in London they’d be from other backgrounds. Are you looking for a name associated with a particular culture OP?

RebeccaCloud9 · 04/01/2019 14:41

I'm pretty sure p's and q's is only just acceptable (not necessary but necessarily incorrect) because of the omission rule.

BertrandRussell · 04/01/2019 15:38

‘Mind your p’s and q’s’. This is acceptable grammar.
