Lord of the rings

Joinourclub · 30/12/2018 12:07

Fee - uh ??

mumof2sarah · 30/12/2018 12:08

I first pronounced it fire but I'm rubbish when it comes to pronunciation lol x

Heismyopendoor · 30/12/2018 12:09

Fie- duh

TinselandToblerones · 30/12/2018 12:09

Fe-ah as in fear?

MissMoodyMoo · 30/12/2018 12:09

I love it MIL hates it and refuses to refer to the baby whom will be here in a few weeks as it! We've literally been calling her it since we found out at 16 weeks she is a girl! Now I'm having doubts

I wouldn't know if it was a girl or boy.
Pronunciation - Fear, maybe Fire, Fie-ad?

BadgerSandwich · 30/12/2018 12:12

It's supposed to be pronounced fee-a isnt it? Id worry about it being pronounced fear or sounding like someone mispronouncing thea

Hanuman · 30/12/2018 12:14

Fee - da

I really advise against - where does it come from?

MissMoodyMoo · 30/12/2018 12:19

It's a gaelic Irish name so in our accent it wouldn't be pronounced as "fear"

It's fee-ah like the ending of Sofia

When I picture myself with her I know she is a Fiadh

Ah if you’re Irish go for it, it’d be butchered by most English accents though

Hanuman · 30/12/2018 12:26

Do you live in Ireland?

Hanuman · 30/12/2018 12:27

Could you go with Sophia and use this as q nickname?

OlennasWimple · 30/12/2018 12:27

It's pretty, but if you live in England she will grow up having to explain how to pronounce it

sirmione16 · 30/12/2018 12:27

If you love it, and you're already picturing her with that name - stick with it. You'll have regrets otherwise, and MIL will come round

noseoftralee · 30/12/2018 12:31

Actually the pronunciation would work quite well with an Irish accent.

My DS has an Irish name that can be spelled several ways. After he was born we handed the midwife a list of the various spellings and asked her to read them. The one that sounded vaguely like his actual name was the one we went with!

GinIsIn · 30/12/2018 12:33

I went to school with one. She got called Faddy all the time.

FestiveNut · 30/12/2018 12:33

Fee-ar-duh

noseoftralee · 30/12/2018 12:36

English accent I meant to say. Hmm

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 30/12/2018 12:36

Fee-v?

Dh can sometimes sound like a v in Scottish Gaelic I think, (and I'm Scottish but east coast so not a speaker!) so that would be my first guess.

FestiveNut · 30/12/2018 12:36

For me the end of Sofia and the word fear sound exactly the same! So-fear. Fear has two syllables to me. Do you pronounce it with only one?

PoorMansPeppaPig · 30/12/2018 12:37

Do you live in Ireland? If not... I'm unsure about it in terms of the spelling you're going for. I love the name as it sounds but the '-dh' bit of spelling makes it hard to figure out how to pronounce it. Could you spell it some other way? Feah or Fiah? Though unsure either of those are much help really...

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 30/12/2018 12:40

Ah just seen your update. I like it. If it's the name you love, use it! Your MIL will have to lump it, not her child to name!
My only proviso is wait until she's born before finally declaring - sometimes they look so different, another name works better (happened to me!)

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 30/12/2018 12:42

festive accents are amazing aren't they? I find it fascinating. In mine Sofia is so-fee-a and fear is more like fee-urr so sound totally different. That Scottish r! Grin

MissMoodyMoo · 30/12/2018 13:00

We live in the West of Scotland and when telling people we haven't had much issue with the pronunciation. My dad has said straight away he'll never learn how to spell it 😡😡😡 people seem to love the name Niamh and have no problem with the spelling but are really thrown off with Fiadh 😂😂
