I was born in the late 60s so was at primary school in the 1970s and names I heard then that I don’t hear so much now and liked:

Tamsin
Farrah
Anoushka
Georgina

Love this thread.
I’ve just seen mine and DHs names. All mine and his siblings names. One of my children too.
Born in 68.
I still like Jaqueline, Phillipa, Yvette, Johanna, Melissa, Louise,

ScreamingBadSanta · 29/12/2018 12:20

Sarah and Emma.

Glowerglass · 29/12/2018 12:21

Alison, Pamela, Valerie, Nicola, Jennifer, Fiona, Elaine

SwedishEdith · 29/12/2018 12:27

I always loved Melanie and still like Linda - I think Lin looks and sounds quite cool. Caroline, Suzanne and Julia would definitely be in the running for my imaginary future daughters.

I like Mark as well.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/12/2018 12:29

@dottydod it's a fantastic name. If I were going to have another boy (I am definitely not) I would fight harder for it. DH and I really struggled to find common ground on boys names.

ShadyLady53 · 29/12/2018 12:30

I know little Tamsin’s and Anoushkas!

My favourite names as a child where Sarah, Crystal and Olivia Hmm.

Olivia is obviously quite common now.

There were quite a few Talias and Eleanors at my schools in the 90s and 00s. I don’t hear as many of those now. Claire, Jennifer, Victoria, Elizabeth and Kathryn/Catherine were all a dime a dozen along with Amy/Amie/Aimee, Hayley and Lucy/ie. Stephanie was quite common too as was Stacey.

I can’t say I’m a fan of any of the names but Stacey is quite cute and I like Brooke and Paris which were quite popular at the time too.

Belindabauer · 29/12/2018 12:32

I've always liked victoria.

simplepimple · 29/12/2018 12:51

Christine, Julie, Amanda, Karen, Nicola

John, Simon, Christopher, Ian, Trevor.

needmorespace · 29/12/2018 12:52

I went to the same secondary school in London in the 70s through to sixth form and never came across a Catherine/Katherine and only one Caroline yet some posters say they are a dime a dozen.
Ebbs and flows of fashion I guess.

keepingbees · 29/12/2018 13:14

I have always liked the name Debbie. My favourite dinner lady at primary school had a daughter called Debbie who was much older but she always used to tell me about her, and I loved the name, still do now.
I also like Jason and Shane.
I think names like Sarah, Emma, Laura etc are pretty timeless and still sound good today, in fact my 6 year old wishes she was Emma.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/12/2018 13:19

My school had Theresa, Catherine, Nicola, Lorna, Sarah, Susan, Anne, Elizabeth, Jane , Caroline, Louise, Emma, Victoria, Deborah, Rachel . I don’t know a single small girl with any of those names, yet they are all lovely. I would rather like to meet a tiny Debbie or Cathy !

masktaster · 29/12/2018 14:46

I love Rachel, but have 2 who have been part of my life in such significant ways that it would feel odd to use - and another couple who are good enough friends.

I also like Kirsty

dottydod · 29/12/2018 14:54

@WildCherryBlossom so did DH and I. We weren't sure if he was going to be a William or a Julian until he was born. I despise the nn Billy though so was struggling! He's Jules at home and it really suits him.

missyB1 · 29/12/2018 15:01

Yay! My name is mentioned loads of times! Even DH’s name is mentioned once - frankly I’m surprised anyone would bring that back Grin I was a 60s baby, names I miss are

Veronica
Geraldine
Rachel
Jill
Susan
Mary
Anne

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2018 15:01

Susan, Helen, Karen, Claire, Sarah, Rachel....
Mark, Stephen, Andrew, David, Darren, Nick, Paul...

LiveSleepSnore · 29/12/2018 15:06

Jennifer, Karen, Amanda, Samantha.

Iain, David, Gary, Colin.

BreconBeBuggered · 29/12/2018 15:19

I liked Elizabeth, Catherine and Alison. Never thought about boys' names at all, but pretty much every male in my class starting school in 1970 was David, Michael, Stephen, Paul, Robert or Andrew. With the odd Alan or John in other classes.

DreamsofJacaranda · 29/12/2018 15:22

At school in the Sixties / Seventies names were less varied than today, so there were often three or four people with the same name in each class. Lots of Susan, Catherine, Amanda and Claire. Both my names are of that era and have been mentioned upthread, but my favourites are Sarah, Alison and Elizabeth.

The boy’s names I like from then are Richard, Simon, David and Mark. Andrew, Paul and Christopher were also very popular.

masktaster · 29/12/2018 19:30

A few people have mentioned Elizabeth, but I don't think that's really gone out of fashion yet. Maybe slightly less popular, but it's still top 50, I know of 2 little ones born in the last year or so, and a handful in most age brackets I regularly come across.

Spooples · 29/12/2018 19:34

I was late 80s and my class contained SO many Sarahs, Lauras, Katies, and Hannahs.

Barely see any of these now in babies

Joanne721 · 29/12/2018 21:43

I was born in the 60s,i can remember there were lots of boys called steven, alan, robert, wayne, richard, tony, neil.girls names were, susan, diane, joanne, debbie, fiona, sally, nicola, karen.

FennyBridges · 29/12/2018 21:51

Sooooo pleased my name has been mentioned positively! I think you're right; we don't use these names so much as it might be odd as they're so many of our friends' names.

I do know a little Sarah though. And Elizabeth.

AliCanTea · 29/12/2018 22:09

I still love Samantha and Natasha from my era. We were mostly Beckys, Lauras, Jennys, Sarahs, Claires... For the boys it was Matthew, Daniel and Christopher.

whenwillthetwitchstrike · 29/12/2018 22:12

At my 40th birthday a couple of years ago I realised I'd never had a birthday party without a Vicky there and it was my first ever party without a Rebecca although the actual Vickys and Rebecca's there had varied over the years due to changing schools, going to Uni, moving areas, moving jobs etc. 9yo DD on the other hand will never have a Rebecca or a Vicky at a party of hers. She will probably always have an Amelia and some variation of Ella/Isabella at hers.

Sophronia · 29/12/2018 22:28

I love Sarah and Jennifer (Jenny)

I also like Katherine, Rebecca, Georgina, Hannah, Alexandra, Bethany, Emma, Rachel, Victoria, Andrew, Jonathan, Adam, Christopher, Luke, Michael, Nicholas, Robert
