Do you know how to pronounce Zosia?

I love this name for a girl but I’m worried it would get mispronounced a lot.

Thanks Smile

I read Zoh-shy-a when I saw it Blush

My brother goes out with a Zosia. She pronounces it Zo-sha

Hushabyelullaby · 29/12/2018 01:37

I know it as Zosha which is the Polish pronunciation, and the name of a previous Holby City character (which is probably where a lot of people have come across the name).

I absolutely love it!

I know one, she's half Polish & half Irish. It's pronounced Zo-sha, the Zo part rhymes with 'go'. Gorgeous name.

RedDwarves · 29/12/2018 07:36

It's Zo-sha.

Zo as in the first syllable of Zoe.

Phebes · 29/12/2018 08:24

Definitely a short o in Polish. Rhymes with “posher” (assuming you don’t pronounce your final rs)

Bringbackthestrioes · 29/12/2018 08:31

What a lovely name -but I would have pronounced it wrong! I would still say use it, I come across plenty of people who’s name I can’t pronounce and they are happy to tell me how to say it.

LokiDokiArtichoki · 29/12/2018 10:08

Thank you all.

It’s such a pretty name (and yes, it’s the polish version of Sophia) but I’m wary of a lifetime of having to spell it/correct pronunciation.
My great grandparents were polish so it’s nice to have a link to those but I’m still undecided.

I didn’t know of the holby city link - would be better if it was a CBeebies program though as would probably be more people aware!

I know a Zosia and she pronounces it Zosha

MaisyPops · 29/12/2018 10:37

There will be probably a lot of telling people how it's pronounced, but once you've told people once then they'd surely get it right next time.

After this thread I now know that if I see a zosia that it's not pronounced zoh-zee-ah Grin

thisisjustdaft · 29/12/2018 10:47

Never heard of it, sorry.

Why not have it as a middle name instead?

Moonstoned · 29/12/2018 11:07

My son has an Irish name and surname which isn’t phonetic in English, but unless you for some reason can’t face telling people how it’s pronounced the first time they encounter it, it’s never constituted an issue anywhere we’ve lived.

Soontobe60 · 29/12/2018 11:13

I would pronounce it Zow shah. It's a beautiful name that I've never heard before.

Soontobe60 · 29/12/2018 11:17

Having the family link is lovely. It's a name that suits a baby, toddler, teen and older woman.

SackOfSprouts · 29/12/2018 11:20

Zosha? It’s beautiful. If I was Polish I’d use it!
