Zélie (pronounced similarly to zay-lee)
Beatrix
Lorelei
Nellie
Scarlett

What do you think of when you hear these names? Are there any positive /negative connotations I'm not thinking of? (I know about the creepy mermaid called Lorelei who used her beauty and song to lure men to their deaths but I actually quite like this! It's made me like the name more for some reason 😂)

Thanks in advance!

Oh and I forgot! Hermione and Minerva. I know they're a bit Harry Potter. I'm obsessed with Harry Potter. I'd not use both names together as that would be OTT obviously but could either be acceptable? Both fab strong characters, think they'd be amazing people for a daughter to look up to, what great role models! Could use Minnie as a nickname for both (granny's name which makes it special!) Both have good meanings outside of HP too (Hermione in Shakespeare was positive, as is Minerva the goddess). Fully prepared to be told these are too much but thought I'd try my luck Smile

They're all fine except Nellie looks misplaced - I'd have thought you'd prefer Eleanor/Helen type 'proper' names with historical meaning, and could have Nellie as a nickname though it's one I'd avoid tbh.
And Scarlett is the sort of name which fits some people but not others.

Itisnearlybedtimeyet · 28/12/2018 12:13

I love Eleanor but it's a bit of a mouthful with our surname - you're right that I prefer it as a full name though! Maybe I'll add Eleanor back to the list Smile I agree that Scarlett would only suit some girls - I imagine a Scarlett to be pretty and fiesty and if she's not then it might not suit her

I like Lorelei :)

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2018 12:31

No to Hermione and Minerva.
Zélie (pronounced similarly to zay-lee) - pretty
Beatrix - nice
Lorelei - too much
Nellie - Nell is better. Helena on bc?
Scarlett - ok

QueenNovo · 28/12/2018 12:32

I like Lorelei and Scarlett.

Dislike Nellie.

Youcancallmeval · 28/12/2018 12:38

Love beatrix. No to nellie as a name in its own right, love it as a nn. Love Lorelei.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 28/12/2018 12:41

I am a huge HP fan but no to Hermione and Minerva. Too much.

Scarlett is my favourite of your list.

Lorelei is Gilmore Girls to me.
Beatrix Potter.

Really don’t like Zélie or Nellie. Sorry.

Itisnearlybedtimeyet · 28/12/2018 12:46

Mixed reactions so far! Thanks for the responses Smile

Okay you're all right about Nellie, I was hesitant to add it to the list as a name in its own right as I normally prefer a full name so I'll knock that off the list or think of a full name!

Is Scarlett too popular? Would be be one of 3 in her class?

Love Lorelei and the nicknames Lori and Rory - the Gilmore Girls is something to consider! Although I do love that show and also think the characters are quite positive?

Keep the opinions coming 😊

I love Lorelei it was on our list! Also like Minerva but I wouldn't use Hermione as it's too associated with Harry Potter... I think Minerva is a lesser known character (they dont even use her first name that much in the books) so that would probably be okay most people would just think of goddess of wisdom.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/12/2018 13:00

I like Scarlett the best- the rest are nice, however
Zélie (pronounced similarly to zay-lee)- I cannot imagine anyone pronouncing this correctly first time of reading it (I’d say zee-lie)

abcriskringle · 28/12/2018 13:15

I love the name Hermione! Also like Lorelei.

OneStepMoreFun · 28/12/2018 13:17

I like Beatrix and Hermione best.

flossietoot · 28/12/2018 13:18

I have one of the names on your list, only know one other. If I was to have another girl I would choose Beatrice rather than Beatrix.

ZebraKid71 · 28/12/2018 13:21

I love Zelie! I had it on my list for Dd2 but oh vetoed.

thisisjustdaft · 28/12/2018 13:24

Like Nellie the best out of them all.

Don't use Hermione. It is a lovely name, but it is so linked with Harry Potter now - people will never let her forget it, and it will drive her crackers in years to come.

SackOfSprouts · 28/12/2018 13:26

I love Nell but not so much Nellie.

Zelie is pretty. What’s the origin?

Not a fan of the other names, unfortunately.

Ikeameatballs · 28/12/2018 13:31

I like:

Zelie
Beatrix
Nell but not Nellie as the given name

Scarlett, Lorelei abut meh.

Hermione and Minerva no, not for HP but just don’t like the names.

What about:

Edith
Harriet
Penelope

Itisnearlybedtimeyet · 28/12/2018 16:16

LOVE Edith but a close family member named her daughter Edie. Love Harriet too but it completely rhymes with our surname (Marriott) Sad

finallychangedmyusername · 28/12/2018 16:31

I love Beatrix and think that Minerva is not TOO HP. You've got a nice family link too for Minnie.

Onemorefireball · 28/12/2018 16:41

I love Lorelei, I have one actually. But we spell it Lorelai, like in Gilmore Girls.

Phebes · 28/12/2018 17:30

Love Hermione, Beatrix and Minerva.

Dislike Scarlett and especially Nellie.

Neutral on Zélie and Lorelei.

How about Anaïs, Zinnia or Penelope “Nellie”?

trueblueari · 28/12/2018 19:43

I love Minerva, I associate it more with the Roman goddess (the equivalent of the Greek goddess Athena - wisdom and warfare) than Harry Potter. Plus it lends itself to using your grandma's name as a nickname, even better!

FestiveNut · 28/12/2018 19:49

Associations:

Hermione- Harry Potter
Minerva- OK, but old fashioned, shortens to Minnie
Zélie (pronounced similarly to zay-lee) - nice, no associations for me
Beatrix - Potter, shortens to Trixie (not a fan, personally) or Bea (old lady)
Lorelei - Gilmore
Nellie - the elephant packed a trunk and said goodbye to the circus.
Scarlett - woman, letter, fever, Johansen. Contains the word scar.

Ikeameatballs · 28/12/2018 20:20

Ok, now I know your surname I would completely discount Minerva and Scarlett. Neither sound great with Marriott.

I still think Beatrix and Zelie from your original list but would also suggest:

Vita
Julia
Darcey
Ianthe
Coralie
Sadie
Neive
Lydia
Orla
Ramona
