What do you think when you hear it? Is it too popular or a classic? Really like it just not sure if there’s too many about? Any similar names? Thank you :)

I only know and one that's my lovely nephew. So I think it's great!

mytieisascarf · 27/12/2018 21:56

It's defo a classic. There are some names that are timeless - Alexander is one of them. Part of it's beauty is that it has so many variations and can be adapted to suit the child as they grow:

Al
Ally
Alex
Alec
Lex
Sandy
Sanders
Zander
Alexander
Alistair

I love it.

Daisymay2 · 27/12/2018 22:00

My Alex is in his 20s now. In his prep school year group (about 40) there were 4 Alexander's and an Alexandra. However by the time he got to University there were very few others that he knew. At various times he has been known as Alexander Alex Xandro and Al. Grandad called him Alec.
We discussed Alaistar but I prefer Alexander. I think it is classic.
Haven't heard many recent babies being called Alexander.

ZebraKid71 · 27/12/2018 22:06

I think it is both too popular and a classic!

Didyeeaye · 27/12/2018 22:08

Love it. I think it's a lovely, classic name with lots of nn potentials. I particularly like Xander on a little boy x

frogbull · 27/12/2018 22:15

It's a classic, but there are loads in my son's school, including my son. I never wanted to choose a really popular name, and this was outside the top 20 when he was born. However, it was top 3 in our region. Should have checked that list!

I still love it though.

mytieisascarf · 27/12/2018 22:15

In our school of around 430 there are only 3 Alexanders.

Iizzyb · 27/12/2018 22:19

My Alexander is the only one we know now - there isn't another in the school (primary) although there was a Xander at nursery.

Personally think it is a brilliant name - great choice op!

He is Ally to his cousins
He was Allypanda as a baby (v young dnephew named him!)
Xander to one friend
Ander (from me when I am trying to get his attention to put the Lego away)

He is definitely not Alex to anyone except his super cool swimming teacher Grin

I work with an Alex (in his 40's) and it works for any---- age imo

You can get a lot of named stuff like mugs & teddies with Alex but rarely seen anything with Alexander on I'm a bit conscious of that as I could never get a mug with my name on as a child either dfriend found a book about Alexander in a garden centre once

There is baby Alexander in Peppe Pig getting a bit over invested in this thread now

Namechanger55555 · 27/12/2018 22:25

I really like Alexander. But it's fairly certain he will become an Alex Sad

starzig · 27/12/2018 22:39

Alexander is lovely. But really mytieisascarf, some of those shortening are embarrassingly awful. Alex or zander are fine but anything else is sacrilege

Sophronia · 27/12/2018 23:10

It’s our top name if we ever have a second DS.

ThatPeskyElf · 27/12/2018 23:12

I hate the name!!
Alexander and Thomas both make me feel queasy.
Boring and unimaginative.
Sorry!

birdgal4848 · 27/12/2018 23:14

It’s a nice enough name but not one I would consider using.
I know a few little ones - and a couple is Alexandra’s actually so maybe it is having a resurgence.
It will 100% be shortened to Alex, if you don’t do it, it will happen at school.

FogCutter · 27/12/2018 23:29

Lovely name but it is very popular, there's 3 in DSs class and he knows another 3 from the clubs he does.

mytieisascarf · 28/12/2018 00:49

FFS @Starzig you must have an extraordinarily low embarrassment threshold. Personally I think Zander is a bit wanky but certainly wouldn't cringe if I met any of the rest of them.

ZenNudist · 28/12/2018 00:55

Well I love it. I know what @ThatPeskyElf is trying to say as its a well used name but it just sounds classic. There are Alexanders of all ages.

You cant go wrong with it because its so versatile. There are plenty of creative variations on what could be considered boring by some. It is a name to take you into all walks of life.

tammytoby · 28/12/2018 06:56

There are 5 Alexes in our school year. Alexander is nice but very trendy at the moment,

YouSetTheTone · 28/12/2018 07:41

I love Alexander. I think it sounds very lyrical yet strong. We have a 2yr old Alexander, and it suits him well. DH calls him Alexander quite a lot, I usually call him Alex (which I also like very much) or Lex.
I like Al/ Ally too but DBIL is called those (for Alastair). I did want to call him Sasha or Sandy but wasn’t brave enough! Oddly I don’t like Zander though.
We don’t know any other Alex’s his age and there are none in DS1’s class at school (DS1 is 6), but obviously it’ll just be luck of the draw.
If you love it don’t be put off by popularity. Of all the top ten names the only ones duplicated in DS1’s class are outside of the top 20 and the only repeated name I know through DC friends/ siblings where we live is Joshua (which is a shame as I really like it but don’t feel I can use it - currently pg again).
(Feel like that might undermine my previous point slightly - as Joshua is a popular name and that’s been bourne out in my circle! But I suppose what I’m saying is you can’t always predict what’s going to end up being a multiple in your child’s class and if you love a name I think that has to be your main priority.)

Similar names IMO would include:
Sebastian
Frederick
Nathaniel
Joshua
Michael
Benjamin

Figgygal · 28/12/2018 07:44

Ds 2 is 2 and he is Alexander though we just use Alex day to day

I don't know any others there's none in my ds 1 year at school and there's 60 on their In take and there's none in his nursery either

Notacluethisxmas · 28/12/2018 07:45

There are 2 in my sons school. My son is one and the other is 3 years older.

I don't know any others. It may be more popular in other areas of the country though.
