Iver?
Ivor?

I like the name pronounce eye-veh (like skiver without the sk 😂)

I've heard Iver is pronounced ee-ver and Ivor is pronounced eye-vor (emphasis on the vor).

Well I’d be paralysed with indecision because I’d instinctively pronounce it eye-ver but know it’s supposed to be Ee-ver for winter in french (and the band Bon Iver).

Jolliett · 27/12/2018 17:58

Iver eye-ver
Ivor eye-vor

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 27/12/2018 17:59

I've a?

Firstbornunicorn · 27/12/2018 17:59

Isn't the name you like spelled "Iveagh"?

sparkiess · 27/12/2018 18:09

@BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs yes pronounced exactly like that.

@Firstbornunicorn never heard of that spelling!

I would pronounce it Eye-vay. Is that what you were going for?

JillScarlet · 27/12/2018 18:17

Eye-vuh for both.
I would assume that Iver is a yoonique spelling for Ivor.

florascotia2 · 27/12/2018 18:43

Depends on which culture you want to identify with, though all mostly pronounced 'Eye-vuh':

Ivar = Viking/Norse (original meaning linked to yew tree and to bow, as in bow-and-arrow)
Ivor = a modern version of the above
Iver = a place name in Buckinghamshire, derived from Anglo-Saxon 'homestead on the brow of a hill'
Iveagh = area in County Down, island of Ireland. Now a title belonging to members of the wealthy Guinness family.

SassitudeandSparkle · 27/12/2018 18:49

Like JillScarlett I'd assume that Iver was an intentional mis-spelling of Ivor and pronounce them the same.

Crimbobimbo · 27/12/2018 18:53

I'd pronounce them both Eye ver

cushioncovers · 27/12/2018 18:54

Eye ver

MikeUniformMike · 27/12/2018 18:55

Iver is a small town in Buckinghamshire. Nice enough place.
Ivor is pronounce Eye-vor, but you may get Eye-ver or Eevor too.
How about Ivar (Eve-arr)?

MikeUniformMike · 27/12/2018 18:56

Winter in french is hiver (eve-air)

Sexnotgender · 27/12/2018 18:57

Eyever
Eyevor

Honeybee79 · 27/12/2018 19:12

There is an Ivar in DS's class. It is pronounced Eye-var but essentially sounds like Eye-ver. You couldn't distinguish between the 2 sounds when saying it.

Ivor I would pronounce Eye-vor

Iver - Eye-ver

sparkiess · 27/12/2018 19:14

What does everyone think of Iver?

Would anyone mispronounce it ee-ver?
Does it sound try hard/or yoonique?

OP posts:
Crimbobimbo · 27/12/2018 19:16

I like the name, but I'd spell it Ivor.

Ivor Big 'un? An old joke.

MikeUniformMike · 27/12/2018 19:29

Bit try hard but that's because I'm thinking of Iver, Bucks,
I wouldn't use Heath as a mn with it.

BackforGood · 27/12/2018 20:06

What does everyone think of Iver? Why mis-spell a perfectly good name?

Would anyone mispronounce it ee-ver? No, wouldn't be my first thought, but, as with any name I've not seen before, I'd go for a sort of questioning tone in my voice when calling it out for the first time.

Does it sound try hard/or yoonique? Well, yes. Why change a name that does the job ?Confused

Ontopofthesunset · 27/12/2018 20:10

I've never heard Ivor pronounced with the stress on the 'vor'; it's always stressed on the 'Eye' part, just like Ivan in British English, with an unstressed vowel for the 'or' - so in my South East accent it sounds exactly the same as "I've a" (hence, of course, the Ivor Bigun joke, which wouldn't work if the stress was on the 'or').

I would pronounce Iver and Ivor the same way, partly because that is also how the hill is pronounced.
