I've always really wanted a name which isn't popular but as time is ticking along I'm starting to worry about my choices.

Top of the list are;
Barnaby
Hugo
Digby

Does anyone know if these are becoming popular? Do you know many?
What other names might I like on a similar line?

Hugo.

champagneduvin · 26/12/2018 13:00

Hugo.

Barnaby reminds me of a barn
Digby is more of a dog name

blueskiesandforests · 26/12/2018 13:06

Digby makes me think of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar...

Morehotchocolate · 26/12/2018 13:29

I definitely don't want him to feel embarrassed about his name but if he's anything like me & DH then he will want to be a little different. We both hated our very plain names when younger.
Plus I think it's far more acceptable these days to have unusual names.

Jasper?

He might not be much like you and your DH though Morehotchocolate - presumably you and your DH are not much like your parents, the pickers of plain names...

Expecting your child to be a minime is usually a recipe for future clashes or disappointment. Especially when you're expecting your child to be "different like me" which is rather logically inconsistent...

I once met a baby Maverick, and I always wonder whether he's grown up to be a tax accountant living in a 1980s semi in Guildford, married with 2 kids... I expect he's rebelled by being the epitome of ordinary...

MikeUniformMike · 26/12/2018 16:05

Hugo is probably far more popular than you think. Barnaby is nice nn Barney. Digby is ok but most people will think of a giant dog.

ZebraKid71 · 26/12/2018 16:17

Hugo is popular in my area, I know of three under the age of 2. Really dislike Digby but I like barnaby.

ZebraKid71 · 26/12/2018 16:20

Also... Its a bit of a strange statement saying its likely your kid will want to be different like you. In reality, most kids just want to fit in. A name won't dictate a personality. My friend is named Pixie Moonshine (very alternative, hippy parents) and she works as an accountant, very straight laced, shy and sensible - not at all how their parents envisioned their child would be!

bathtimesanity · 26/12/2018 16:25

Love Hugo :)

Morehotchocolate · 26/12/2018 17:32

@ZebraKid71 I said 'if' he's anything like us. I didn't say it was likely he would be!
I'm nothing like my parents. It's purely a saying if you care to read my statement properly. 😬

Of the three, Digby is the only one that is a 'bit different'.
If you are after a name that isn't a top 100 name then it's the best of the 3. I'd be inclined to use it as a mn with a bog standard 1st name - he could use it as his known as name if he was many with his first name.
e.g. Jack Digby Chocolate nn Digby if he is one of 8 Jacks in his peer group.

I'd wait till you meet him op

I agonised for ages over names for DS before he was born and had the name ready for about 2 months beforehand. However, as soon as he was born I looked at him and knew the chosen name was completely wrong. Instead, another name that we hadn't even considered popped into my head and I knew it was completely right for him.

Luckily DH felt exactly the same way about it - one of the few occasions we have ever been able to agree on anything Grin

So don't worry, all will become clear when you meet your little bundle.

I like Barnaby by the way Smile

I really like Barnaby, with Barney as a nickname. Hugo and Digby are nice too.
