So we are having a surprise so need both girl and boy names. Boy sorted. Girl we were going for Ayda Florence. I like 4 letter first names, longer middle name. We already have a Isla Primrose. Robbie Williams wife has thrown me as she pronounces it Ey-da. I wanted it to be pronounced Aya. How would you pronounce it please- is there a right and wrong. Quick help I’m 40+4

It will often be pronounced eye-da, and is too similar to Isla.

Shylo · 25/12/2018 23:27

Aya with no ‘d’ sound at all? If so that’s not how I read the name at all - looking at it I’d have said the same as Ayda Williams

celtiethree · 25/12/2018 23:27

Tbh as pp said too close to Isla in pronounciation.

Primrose16 · 25/12/2018 23:29

That’s Ada- not Aya. Can’t correct original post

People will pronounce it how you tell them to pronounce it
I know a Diana whose name is pronounced Deanna, no one bats an eyelid

Though I think pronouncing it Ai-dah weather than Aya (unless that was a typo) will make it sound different from Isla when you’re shouting their names up the stairs because they ate your dairy milk aged 14

ThatPeskyElf · 25/12/2018 23:30

Ah just seen your update

Highlowpo · 25/12/2018 23:31

I do know of an Ayda pronounced Ada but I do think the 'y' makes it confusing and problematic with it being so close to Isla.

Primrose16 · 25/12/2018 23:32

Yeah it’s late and didn’t check post first 😂

I was Ada but in 4 letters basically. I’m a bit strange

Loopytiles · 25/12/2018 23:37

Ada is fine, but still similar to Isla.

Ayda is an unusual spelling and will often be pronounced Eye-da.

“People will pronounce it how you tell them to pronounce it”. But later, once DD is at school and onwards, she will have to do this, again ane again and again.

neddle · 25/12/2018 23:42

I would pronounce Ayda and Ada in exactly the same way.

Primrose16 · 25/12/2018 23:49

I’m all stressed now I honestly didn’t think that Isla and Ayda (pronounced Ada) sounded similar. Now I’m even more stressed. It’s the only name we agree on

If I saw it written down, I'd guess at 'Ay-da' ('Ay' to rhyme with hay / pay / say), but I'd do it with a bit of hesitancy as it's not a name I know.

I think you'll get some confusion with her sister when you are calling them - the sounds of the 2 names are pretty similar. That would put me off.

RCohle · 26/12/2018 00:06

The similarity with Isla would put me off.

I'm also not a fan of needlessly "unique" spellings of traditional names. Why not just use Ada?

ZebraKid71 · 26/12/2018 00:16

If it's Ada that's fine.

Ayda I would pronounce Eye-da, in which case sounds way too much like Isla. Why spell it that way if you want the Ada pronunciation?

AliCanTea · 26/12/2018 00:33

I think it's fine with Isla personally but my two guesses at pronunciation would be Ada or Eye-ee-da.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 26/12/2018 02:09

I agree with pp; lovely name but v close to Isla

PsychoCrayon · 26/12/2018 07:27

Ayda is eye-da.

Just spell it Ada.

But If you’re set on 4 letters then Aida works better (but autocorrects to aids)

Primrose16 · 26/12/2018 08:01

Oh I don’t want any autocorrecting mishaps.
I’m getting really stressed now this name has been chosen for the last few months and I honestly read Adya as Ada, didn’t know there was another way to pronounce- until last night. Getting my other half and I to agree on a name has been flipping hard.
He hates things I like and visa versa

OP posts:
Aquilla · 26/12/2018 08:15

I think Ada and Isla are lovely together.

Cookit · 26/12/2018 08:17

I thought Ada was pronounced “A” (like capital A) - da.
I would pronounce Ayda with the first syllable rhyming with high, so Aye-da.

Otherwise the name would just be spelt Ada no?

ImAChaiseLongueGetMeOutOfHere · 26/12/2018 08:22

Iona
Tara
Same origins?

SilverLlama · 26/12/2018 08:30

Does it have to be 4 letters? I think this much stressing over a Y is a bit silly.

Tbh though I do prefer the Eye-da pronunciation, but only because Ada reminds me of (first) Aider

Primrose16 · 26/12/2018 08:44

I like Ayda pronounced both ways. But I think if it gets pronounced ey-da it is too similar to Isla. I mentioned all this to hubby last night and he showed zero interest. I don’t want people thinking that I’m not original and trying to get matchy names as that’s just strange.
I just wanted a 4 letter name. I like short names but I think 3 letters too short. My boy name is 4 letters too.
I was kinda hoping for another girl as i can use same clothes etc. But now I’m hoping for boy as I have no clue what to do girl name wise.

jigsawpiece · 26/12/2018 09:19

Just go for Ada, forget the 4 letter thing. If you were set on "Jo" it would be silly to go for "Johe" just to make up the letters. Congrats on your baby :-)

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2018 09:27

Don’t give your child a lifetime of name aggro fir the sake of some self-imposed rule about how many letters in her name!

If you want her name to be pronounced “Ada”, then call her Ada. Aud if you must, but in my experience people wil default to the most simple orveatablished spelling and pronounciatuon of a name.

But - Ada is too similar to Isla.
